Elections in Mississippi |
---|
The 2024 United States presidential election in Mississippi is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, as part of the 2024 United States elections in which all 50 states plus the District of Columbia will participate. Mississippi voters will choose electors to represent them in the Electoral College via a popular vote. The state of Mississippi has six electoral votes in the Electoral College, following reapportionment due to the 2020 United States census in which the state neither gained nor lost a seat. [1]
Though Mississippi has voted to the left of its bordering states in recent presidential elections, owing mainly to its large African-American minority, the state is located in the Deep South and therefore the Bible Belt. It is one of the most socially conservative states in the nation, and has not been won by a Democrat at this level since fellow Southerner Jimmy Carter narrowly did in 1976 nor has it been competitive since Bill Clinton of neighboring Arkansas fell five points short of carrying the state in 1996. Thus, Mississippi is predicted to go safely for the Republican candidate in 2024.
Incumbent Democratic president Joe Biden is running for reelection to a second term. [2]
Independent Attorney Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has received the nomination of the Reform Party of the United States of America, which has ballot access in the state. [3]
The Mississippi Republican primary was held on March 12, 2024, alongside primaries in Hawaii, Idaho, Missouri, and Washington. 40 delegates to the Republican National Convention will be allocated to presidential candidates. [4]

The 2024 Mississippi Democratic presidential primary was held on March 12, 2024, alongside the Democrats Abroad, Georgia, Mississippi, and Washington primaries, and Northern Mariana Islands caucuses. 40 delegates to the Democratic National Convention will be allocated to presidential candidates. [6]
In Mississippi, candidates have to pay a filing fee of $2,500 and gather at least 500 signatures to make the primary ballot. [7] Incumbent President Joe Biden was the only candidate that met the requirements, and is therefore the presumptive winner of the primary. [8][ better source needed]
