At the time of the 2006 National Census, Baktash's population was 3,198 in 756 households, when it was a village in Zarrineh Rud Rural District of the
Central District.[6] The following census in 2011 counted 3,525 people in 984 households.[7] The 2016 census measured the population of the village as 3,523 people in 1,065 households. It was the most populous village in its rural district.[2]
In May 2020, the rural district was separated from the district in the establishment of Baktash District, which was divided into two rural districts, including the new
Mozaffarabad Rural District.[4] In February 2021, the village of Baktash was elevated to the status of a city.
