FamilyRhédey family

Count László Rhédey de Kis-Rhéde (29 September 1775 – 22 November 1835) was a Hungarian noble. Through his daughter Claudine, Rhédey is an ancestor of the British royal family as the great-grandfather of Queen Mary.

Early life and family

Count László Rhédey de Kis-Rhéde was born on 29 September 1775. He was born into the Transylvanian branch of the aristocratic Rhédey family. [1]

Later life and death

Rhédey resided primarily at his castle in Erdőszentgyörgy (present-day Sângeorgiu de Pădure), and he also resided partly in Vienna and in a castle in Kolozsvár (present-day Cluj-Napoca). [2] Rhédey's castle in Erdőszentgyörgy was surrounded by an extensive park and ornamental gardens. [2] He also constructed the Suspension House, near his castle in Kolozsvár, which he later transformed into a theatre, which he bestowed to the town of Kolozsvár. [2] This theater at one time housed the State Hungarian Theatre of Kolozsvár. [2]

Historian Louis Felberman described Rhédey as, "a very elegant and handsome man." [2]

Rhédey died on 22 November 1835 at age 60. [1]

Marriage and issue

Rhédey married Baroness Ágnes Inczédy de Nagy-Várad, daughter of Baron Gregor Inczédy de Nagy-Várad and his wife Baroness Karolina Barcsay de Nagy-Barcsa. [1] [2] He and his wife had one child, a daughter, Countess Claudine Rhédey von Kis-Rhéde. [1] [2] Claudine married morganatically to Duke Alexander of Württemberg (1804–1885) and the couple had three children, including Francis, Duke of Teck (1837–1900). Francis married British royal family member Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge (1833–1897), thus establishing the Teck-Cambridge family in British nobility.

Through the marriage of Francis' daughter Mary of Teck (1867–1953) to George V, Rhédey is a direct ancestor of Edward VIII, George VI, Elizabeth II, Charles, Prince of Wales, and all present British royal family members by birth.
