What happened to the 2000 edition of the WCH? Will there be a 2008 edition of the WCH? Why is this even an issue? This is a tournament that must be held every 4 years.

They aren't doing one in 2008, and why was the 2008 World Championship result counted as the World Cup? I erased that, they are two very different tournaments. —Preceding

This page needs disambiguation, to include the word "ice" in the header. I am inclined to move it to World Cup of ice hockey but if that doesn't really fit with the WCH then I will move it to World Cup of Hockey (ice). Anyone got any suggestions? OK?
Moriori 08:48, Aug 31, 2004 (UTC)
Is there another World Cup of Hockey ? IMO, if there isn't another, there is no need to 'disambig'. --
PFHLai 08:53, 2004 Aug 31 (UTC)
It's not called the world cup of ice hockey, it's called the world cup of hockey. I realized that this was important when I tried changing some field hockey links earlier this year. If there is a 2004 World Cup of (field) Hockey then please let us know!
Earl Andrew 18:10, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
There have been a men's World Hockey Cup and women's World Hockey Cup for many years . See the following website,
http://www.planetfieldhockey.com/PFH/Site-View-0-158. The hockey cup is contested by many countries. The final 16 at the last men's hockey cup were (in finish order) Germany, Australia, Korea, Pakistan, Argentina, England, Malaysia , New Zealand, India, Spain, Japan , South Africa, Belgium, Poland and Cuba. (India, where hockey is the national sport, probably has more field hockey players than all the ice hockey players in the world). Note at
Field Hockey the following -- In the English-speaking world outside Canada and the United States, it is generally referred to simply as "hockey", as ice hockey is not commonly played there. Go to
Hockey and you quite correctly reach a disambiguation page, and for Wiki to be consistent any mention of hockey elsewhere should also be disambiguated, especially as the ice people chose a name that can confuse.
Moriori 20:32, Aug 31, 2004 (UTC)
Oh, yes, go right ahead and disambiguate 'ice hockey' and 'field hockey'. However, please don't move and change the name of this page to anything other than "World Cup of Hockey". If the name of the page is not the same as the event (e.g. World Cup of ice hockey ???), it would be very confusing.
Perhaps
World Cup (hockey) should not redirect to
World Cup of Hockey, but we can have
World Cup (ice hockey) for that. Perhaps
World Cup (hockey) should redirect to a (long) disambiguation page instead, with links to all the top level hockey championships played on various surfaces. Would be helpful to also mention the Stanley Cup and the IIHF World Championship if anyone gets confused. Ditto for the roller hockey championship. I don't know how to name this page, though. Any ideas, anyone ? --
PFHLai 21:18, 2004 Aug 31 (UTC)
Why was there no World Cup in 2000? Eight years seems like an unusual interval...I know the Canada Cup wasn't always four years, but it was never eight, was it.
Adam Bishop 19:28, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I've always wondered that myself. Might have something to do with the olympics. Anyways here is my solution: we keep this page as is, and for the field hockey, it should be at
World Hockey Cup, as that appears to be the name of the tournament.
Earl Andrew 22:25, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
OK, seems reasonable, but there will be some disambs that need doing. I think
PFHLai is right that
World Cup (hockey) should not redirect to
World Cup of Hockey. What do you think?
Moriori 23:45, Aug 31, 2004 (UTC)
The Canada Cup was a different entity. It was "retired" to make way for The World Cup of Hockey, which became redundant after a single run when NHL players were admitted to play in the Olympics. The World Cup and the 1972 Canada Russia Summit Series should certainly link to the Canada Cup, but each tournament should remain in it's own page. The three entities are not ambiguous.

Some of the content on this page should be removed because it duplicates the Canada Cup page too much. If there are no objections...
Kevlar6702:14, 15 March 2007 (UTC)reply
Disagree - keep them separate, with wikilinks to the other as appropriate. There is enough history for each to support its own article. —

Disagree Not the same event. Info that is duplicated on this page should just be removed and only mention how it is looked upon as the successor to the Canada Cup. -

Comment: I think a source needs to be found that says either it's a renaming or a replacement. The two articles disagree on the point (neither is referenced). Depending on what a source said would depend on how I voted: renaming, I'd vote merge; replacement, I'd vote no merge. --

Agree. The NHL web site (which hosts the official World Cup of Hockey site) includes the Canada Cup history on its World Cup history page:
[1]. Thus, the same event, or at least so closely related as to require no separation.
PowersT11:27, 1 May 2008 (UTC)reply
Certainly a successor event, though. Why else would the World Cup of Hockey present the Canada Cup history as its own?
PowersT19:11, 4 May 2008 (UTC)reply
Strongly Disagree These need to be separated. The Canada Cup is an integral part of Canadian hockey history... the hunk of aluminum known as the World Cup has not en capsuled the kind if history the Canada Cup has.

Comment: Totally agree with JD554. All these merge votes with the argument "it's the same tournament" and all these no merge votes with the argument "it's not the same tournament" are pretty moot unless we can get consensus on whether it is the same tournament. And that requires sources. The NHL cite is good, but is it enough? --

Strongly Disagree dont know if its too late to say my two cents here. I would say the very fact that the canada cup was occuring regularly and the world cup has been held every 8 years basically...Id even argue the importance of the tournment.

2012 World Cup of Hockey
Hosting Rights
Following the new outline by bothe the NHL and IIHF, nations expressing interest in hosting the World Cup had to submit bids. The three nations who put themselves in contention were Sweden, Russia and Switzerland Midway through the bidding process however Sweden announced it would change its bid to a joint bid with neighbouring Finland. After a long and complex evalution of each bid from the prospective hosts the joint Sweden/Finland bid won the rights to host the 2012 World Cup of Hockey.
Qualification
Unlike previous tournaments nations will haveto qualify fo the right to take part in the world cup. Sweden and Finland automaticaly qualify because of the fact that the are the host nations. Canada and the USA also qualify automaticaly as they are the only nations outside of Europe ranked in the top twenty according to the IIHF.
Twelve nations (all from Europe) will participate in a qualifycation process similair to that used in European football. The twelve nations are split into two groups, consisting of six countries each, with the teams occupying first and second in thier respective qualification groups earning the right to partake in the 2012 World Cup of Hockey.
Qualification Groups
GROUP 1: Germany, Slovakia, Italy, Austria, Norway, Czech Republic
GROUP 2: Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Ukraine, Denmark, Switzerland
Hosting Rights
While not yet specified, it seems as though Sweden will host more matches than Finland during the tournament, including the final. Gothenburg, Malmo and Stockholm look to be the Swedish cities to host matches whlst Helsinki and Turku are likely to host all matches in Finland. Gothenburg is set to contracted with the hosting rights of the final. —Preceding

Though the mistake hasn't been made in this article, players who participated in this tournament (including the predessor Canada Cup), have erroneous 'gold/silver/bronze' medals added to their respective bio articles. This medals don't exist in this tournament (just like they don't in the NHL playoffs).
