Noting
"He ran away from home in his teens, worked as a hat salesman and as a utility boy,[6] and eventually adapted his middle name "Edwin" into his new stage name, "Ed Wynn", to save his family the embarrassment of having a low comedian as a relative."
I have to point out that most Jewish or generally-ethnic comics took on stage names. In fact, most actors, period, took on stage names. Jack Benny was actually Benjamin Kubelsky, George Burns was actually Nathan Birnbaum, and so forth. Making the leap to assert that Wynn removed the "Leopold" to save shame within his family, I think, needs to be substantiated.
I've added a TV guest appearance on THE RED SKELTON HOUR shortly before he died. When Wynn was publicly known to be dying of cancer, Skelton invited him on his show and told him they'd do whatever h e had the energy for. It was supposed to have been a marvelous show. LIFE MAGAZINE ran a one-page spread on the
appearance at the time.
On another front, Wynn's co-star in t he 1940 Broadway show BOYS AND GIRLS TOGETHER was Jane Pickens, who later married into high society and became one of Newport,Rhode Island's supreme hostesses. — Preceding
