Aston Villa played the 1938β39 English football season in the Football League First Division having won promotion in the previous season. [1] The pre-season Jubilee Fund matches saw Villa pitched against local rivals West Bromwich Albion. The derby match ended in a 1β1 draw with Frank Broome scoring for Aston Villa and Harry Jones grabbing one for the Baggies. [2]
In the Second City derby Villa were beaten three-nil away but won 5β2 at Villa Park. [3]
On 19 September, Villa secured their first home win with a 5β0 win over Brentford which The Times described as impressive as it was decisive. [4]
There were debuts for Frank Moss, George Edwards, Frank O'Donnell, Alan Wakeman and Joe Rutherford. [5]
