Workplace is an online
collaborative software tool developed by
Meta Platforms. Its features include instant messaging, file sharing, and video and audio conferencing. It was announced on 14 May 2024 that Meta would be sunsetting Workplace in 2026.
History
Workplace was first announced on January 14, 2015.[1] It launched in beta as Facebook at Work before officially launching in October 2016.[2][better source needed] Free accounts were discontinued as of February 2021.[citation needed]
Workplace for Good was launched in June 2018 to provide a free version of Workplace for registered non-profits and staff of educational institutions.[3]
In October 2018, Workplace announced the launch of Safety Check.[4] Originally developed by Facebook engineers after the
2011 Japanese tsunami,[citation needed] Safety Check for Workplace allows organizations to identify employees who may be affected by a crisis and send and monitor responses. Safety Check has been used by
Delta Air Lines (during
Hurricane Florence and the
Hokkaido earthquake).[5]
As of May 2021, there were 7 million paying users.[6]
In May 2024, Meta announced that it would be phasing out Workplace and shutting it down completely in 2026.[7][8]
Functions
While Workplace accounts are set up and run separately[9] from Facebook accounts, Workplace uses much of Facebook's underlying technology. Workplace uses
machine learning to rank information in a user's news feed and make recommendations, while 'downranking' less relevant information.[10] Workplace data is stored across 12 Facebook-owned and operated data centers.[11]
Reception
PC Mag described it as "Facebook if your employer restricted membership to only your coworkers and bosses" and concluded "Workplace is what an organization makes of it".[12]
Closing Workplace from Meta
It was announced on May 14, 2024 that Meta would be shutting down its Workplace product in June, 2026.[13]
The shut down of Workplace will be done in phases to make the transition to a new solution "as smooth as we can".[14]
Shut Down Timeline
The phases of the shut down of Workplace from Meta is expected to follow the below timeline:[15]
Until August 31, 2025: You will be able to continue using Workplace as usual.
September 1, 2025 - May 31, 2026: Workplace will only be accessible to read and download existing data.
June 1, 2026: Your access to Workplace will be terminated and your Workplace will be deleted.
Zoom Migration Partner
As part of the shut down announcement, Workvivo by Zoom was named as Meta's preferred migration partner, and said, "we will be working with Zoom to provide additional tools and services to facilitate a better transition for customers from Workplace to Zoom's Workvivo product."[16] No further details have been provided.
Other Replacement Alternatives
While they don't have the "preferred vendor" distinction, several other vendors have offered their platforms as a viable replacement. Some of these include:
"MangoApps, launched in 2012, as an original enterprise social networking platform. It offers a similar user experience to Workplace by Meta, with matching features and a data migration service to ensure minimal disruption and a seamless transition. As one of the original enterprise social network (ESN) vendors, only MangoApps has all the constructs needed to map your Workplace content directly and provide a seamless transition to a new product."[17]
"Facebook Workplace is shutting down, so you're here for an alternative. Happeo helps you connect teams and manage everything your company knows to transform your organization from the inside out and power each employee's day-to-day."[18]
"Impacted by the 2025 Meta Workplace shutdown? We’ve got you. Staffbase is the award-winning Workplace alternative for communicators at 2500+ enterprises."[20]
"Workplace by Meta is shutting down, so where do you go from here? Enabling your frontline workforce to do great work requires more than just communication and more than yet another social media tool. Think twice before giving your workers another app that is built for office workers. Beekeeper is the complete frontline solution you need to keep your workers communicating, engaged, and productive."[21]
"Our enterprise-grade capabilities include the most robust CMS in the industry, broadcasts, segments, VOD, journeys, digital assistants, and more. And if you like how user-friendly Workplace is, you’ll love the intuitive interface in the LumApps platform."[23]
"If your business is affected by the closure of Workplace, we’re here to support you with finding a new intranet solution. Whether you have questions about our extensive set of features, what a transition to Interact entails, or you’re interested in a product demo, get in touch and we’ll be happy to help."[24]
