- Blade for Barter: In my opinion it doesn't go out of its way to advertise and not many pages link to it. It is in one of the lists of
Template:Opentask and therefore lots of people may be verifying it anyway. There are similar articles that should most probably be deleted because they are advertising, look at some of
JAST USA's products.
May Club looks like advertising for example.

At the beginning of anime articles should we be using the
Template: Nihongo for the english, japanese and romanji? After sifting through the talk page for the template, I've read that it performs formatting by bolding the english and italicising the japanese automatically and can hide the japanese if the user's OS does not support it. The problem is that I've never seen an anime article use it. -

- Totally missed that, only just edited it recently too. It seems that it does not automatically bold the english and so would be less useful at the beginning of articles. There seems to be no standard for title formating at the beginning of anime articles. Some people use English name (Japanese Romanji) and others use English name (Japanese Romanji) with no italics in the actual title. -
Squilibob
00:04, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- OK, I'm a little late.... if you put ''' or ''''' around the whole template, they will only affect the first word (the kanji will be normal and the romaji, if present, will be in italic as is standard). So basically, just replace the title with the template and whatever format is currently present will remain unchanged. So, to pick an article at random, the first line of
He is My Master is currently
- '''He is My Master''' (これが私の御主人様 ''Kore ga Watashi no Goshujin-sama'')
- Which gives you
- He is My Master (これが私の御主人様 Kore ga Watashi no Goshujin-sama)
- To Nihongify it you do this:
- '''{{nihongo|He is My Master|これが私の御主人様|Kore ga Watashi no Goshujin-sama}}'''
- Which gives you
- He is My Master (これが私の御主人様, Kore ga Watashi no Goshujin-sama)
-

First of all I dont mean to come of rude but I have a question i have had for some time. I do not understand why their such an emphasis made on providing japanese spelling for all material that originated from Japan. Its understandable if the article speaks of something solely only found in Japan but why do all this english translated/dubbed/broadcasted anime programs make so much reference to japanese/japanese original translation titles. I hope i didnt come off too vulgar but I was just curious.
Tutmosis
20:21, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
- I think the biggest reason is because there are a lot of people interested in the "original Japanese." Granted, not everyone is interested, but we are providing it so that if they are interested, it's there for them to use. Those who aren't interestd will simply ignore it. --

Tutmosis, it sounds like a job for Wiktionary
Gerard Foley
02:10, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
- Wiktionary is specifically for definitions. Providing the Japanese for a specific title of something that originated in Japan is not defining it, but simply providing the Japanese for interested parties. It's an encyclopedic thing, and is especially important when the English version differes from the original Japanese. Providing both assists people in their research. --
日本穣
19:07, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
- Wikitonary wouldn't be the place for that. Even though this is the English Wikipedia site, since the material being talked about is Japanese then makes total sense to me to include Japanese spelling. If you are doing research on something from anime then this is exactly the kind of thing that is useful. If you search other places after coming here, but search only the "official" English spelling then you probably won't find all there is to find. Or if you started from outside Wikipedia and want to know if info you found is talking about the same character as an article here, but the first article had the original Japanese name.
- Also if there are lots of different spellings for the English version this can also tell the reader a little bit about how strict the translation and / or "Americanization" (in the case of some) of the script was. All in all it seems useful information to me. --
Ned Scott
19:19, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
- If by "Japanese spelling" you mean the Japanese language equivalent of the term such as 櫻花 (sakurabana, Cherry Blossom) they are very good to include in articles. I will often search the wikipedia in
rōmaji simply to find the correct
kanji for a term that I'm looking for. (I'll also use it to get a quick link to the Japanese wikipedia.) Japanese is full of
homographs. Say if I were looking up information on
Ri Koran the pseudonym of a famous WWII Japanese singer/actress/politician from
Manchukou. Her name could be written a few different ways in Kanji: 紅蘭 or 紅鸞. --

I've been looking at redoing
Template:Infobox Anime convention for the past couple of days. I mainly want to prevent text from poorly wrapping when it is too wide for the table cell--particularly the location. I also like to make the image and official_website parameters optional. But with 38 pages currently using the infobox, this isn't something I'm going into lightly.

I'm a little unsure on what the conventions on listing characters are. Some pages make it into a tertiary heading (ie the "===" tags) such as the current
ToHeart page, while others will keep the character names bolded only, such as the
Rozen Maiden article. In both they are both followed by a description and other information about the characters.
In articles with numerous characters, perhaps the former elongates the contents page too much. However, it does look much better given the font size and the bold typeface applied to the character's names.
I am referring to the 7th March and 8th March edits of
ToHeart2 and
ToHeart.
Is there a set convention here which we can all follow? I would personally prefer the latter, as the character descriptions do not seem to be long enough to warrent their own sections.
Karn-b
03:11, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- In my opinion, if all the characters need their own sections then they could probably have their own articles. Devoting an entire section to a character means that there should be enough information to warrant it's own article.
- ToHeart is a really bad example. That character section is as you said, making the TOC huge unneccessarily. Rozen Maiden is an excellent example of a good character layout.
- There are a few conventions though I wouldn't call them set conventions, they're just what's happening with anime articles
- Pages with a small amount of info on a small amount of characters are kept on the main article. Rozen Maiden is the example for this.
- Pages with a small amount of info on a large amount of characters are split onto pages called List of characters from such and such series which in turn can be split again like
List of Dragon Ball characters.
- Then there are character pages that need their own article, like
Belldandy for example.
- I think that any pages using the tertiary heading tags should be changed into one of these three. -
Squilibob
04:13, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think there is any set style guild on how to organize anime related articles at this time, and what few guidelines exists are scattered across the talk page or in other MoSs. Perhaps one should be created and included into the WikiProject's page.--
TheFarix
04:21, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- I would recommend the layout I put forward in
Spirited Away. The characters are presented with their names and original kanji in brackets (with romanization and literal meaning) and the indenting keeps it neat. The Rozen Maiden layout is good too. -
Phorque
05:24, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- Any series with many characters should probably have a separate page called Characters in X series (or, if it has no descriptions, List of characters in X series). The layout on that page could vary. A good one can be found at
Characters in Bleach series, although its TOC is possibly too long and all Gotei 13 divisions may have to be united. -- Y

On the bottom of the Bleach article, there is a box containing a list of different articles on Bleach, with links to sections within the article. What is this called, and how can one be created?
Karn-b
16:54, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
- The Bleach infobox at the bottom, if that's what you mean, does not link to sections within the article, but only to different articles. However, if it's not what you meant, I'll answer both questions:
- To make an infobox, you should first create a template, like
Template:Bleach info, then add {{
Bleach info}} (or whatever other name) to any pages where you want the infobox to be displayed.
- To link to sections within an article, you can use anchors, as in: [[Bleach (manga)#Quincy|Quincy]], which will link you to the Quincy section of Bleach (manga).
- Finally, don't forget that you can click edit this page on any given page and see how it was made.

While sorting through some of the articles to see which ones can be destub, I happened across several articles that have been double stubbed with both {{

Japan-voice-actor-stub}}. Since the two are closely related, I've made the category for {{{{
Japan-voice-actor-stub}} a subcategory for
Category:Anime and manga stubs. The question I have is, can the stubs be trimmed down to just one? In this case, to just {{

TheFarix (

23:07, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
- I agree, there is little benefit as {{

Squilibob
07:55, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

I've been thinking about how best to reduce
Category:Anime. The current scheme has been to divide everything into
Anime series, Anime OVA, and
Anime films. However, I don't think this will be enough, especially with the possibility of several anime being cross categorized in at least two if not all three categories. As an alternative I propose sorting based on the anime's genre:
-
Action anime,
Adventure anime,
Comedy anime,
Drama anime,
Fantasy anime,
Harem anime,
Historical anime,
Horror anime (already created),
Magical girl anime,
Martial arts anime,
Mecha anime,
Mystery anime,
Romance anime,
School anime,
Science fiction anime,
Sports anime
The naming scheme follows
Horror anime which already exists. With more categories, problems with a single category growing too large because of cross categorization should no longer be a problem. --

I like the plan in principle, but think the first scheme (series, OVA, films) is generally better. The reason is, series/OVA/films is a more straight-forward category than genres and offers much less confusion - basically any user can categorize like that, while not all users may immediately understand the genre of the anime/manga (based on the article). However, this does not stop us from also making genre-based categories and having more than one category for each article. -- Y
