Intersectionality was invented by Black women activists to understand gender and race mutually through their relationship with one another. Music, as an expressive form that is often both privately and communally meaningful and created within the dynamics of its time, plays important roles in how people understand themselves and one another in the world (including, at times, misrepresentation and under-representation). This writing intensive, discussion-based course for music majors explores a wide range of music (popular, traditional, art) and identities (gender, race, sexuality, class, region, religion, age, ability, etc.).
