Drunvalo Melchizedek (  | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – ( View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources:  Google ( books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

It's regrettable that this page has remained on Wikipedia for so long. It relies exclusively on primary sources and blog posts. Drunvalo Melchizedek lacks significant coverage in multiple, independent reliable sources. There are no serious reviews of his self published books. Consensus was deletion after a previous nomination in 2012. Not much has changed. He might be well known in New Age pseudoscience circles but there is nothing of substance for a Wikipedia page. Ynsfial ( talk) 19:07, 17 July 2024 (UTC) reply

  • Comment The AFD is inaccurate as this is not the same page from 2012. It was recreated from scratch with available info in 2019. Also, the AFD does not actually give any specific grounds for deletion except what sounds like personal disdain, which WP needs to be above. In fact, the deletion submission itself admits topical notability. Whether said topical area is bad or good is not relevant to encyclopedic inclusion. - Keith D. Tyler 12:15, 21 July 2024 (UTC) reply
You need to give my AFD a second read. My specific grounds for deletion are clearly stated. Drunvalo Melchizedek lacks significant coverage in multiple, independent reliable sources, which I determined after checking for coverage of him online. Second of all, as an author and researcher, his work lacks serious reviews, though I recognize this is just one aspect of author notability criteria that he fails to meet. He doesn't seem to meet the others either. I'm not sure what you mean about topical notability. A TikToker every other teen is familiar with is well known to many people. But if there isn't much serious coverage of them they aren't encyclopedically notable. If you believe he meets the notability criteria, please provide a few credible sources this. Ynsfial ( talk) 13:41, 23 July 2024 (UTC) reply
My first inclination would be WP:AUTHOR, in that, at least in his field (however dubious), he is considered a significant figure. This is rather bolstered, I would say, by the number of the independent secondary sources already cited. Additionally, that his work has been the inspiration for notable artists as diverse as Tool and Willow Smith lends some amount of significant influence. But again, even your nomination concedes that "he might be well known in New Age... circles" which would seem to render the question moot; even you're not entirely certain of his non-notability, which I still think shoots significant holes through any WP:NN argument.
As for WP:RS, I would point to Wikipedia:Fringe_theories#Parity_of_sources:
Parity of sources may mean that certain fringe theories are only reliably and verifiably reported on, or criticized, in alternative venues from those that are typically considered reliable sources for scientific topics on Wikipedia. For example, the lack of peer-reviewed criticism of creation science should not be used as a justification for marginalizing or removing scientific criticism of creation science, since creation science itself is not published in peer-reviewed journals. Likewise, the views of adherents should not be excluded from an article on creation science solely on the basis that their work lacks peer review. Other considerations for notability should be considered as well.
    Keith D. Tyler 05:30, 24 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Thank you for pointing out the guideline concerning parity of sources. Please provide 3 of the independent secondary sources cited that you think best establish notability and we can discuss it from there. Ynsfial ( talk) 15:04, 26 July 2024 (UTC) reply

  • Keep & fix article issues (or draftify). Yes, the article has had extensive edits by CoI accounts. However, as noted in the nom, much of the promo text has been addressed. Poorly sourced is not the same as unsourced, and it also is different from "unsourcable". A quick look through JSTOR shows that Sweeney is an often referenced academic in his field, and I think that the subject would be found to be notable with a little bit of effort. Fixing an article's issues is generally preferable to deletion ( WP:ATD), and if that can't be done, it should be draftified. ButlerBlog ( talk) 12:36, 31 July 2024 (UTC) reply
    @ Butlerblog
Hi, yes point taken. Just to clarify on the issue of sources...
When I said "poorly sourced" above I meant that some of the material is entirely unsourced and some of the sources that do exist are either written by Sweeney himself or are to YouTube or are promotional links to where his books can be purchased on Amazon.
With regards to your comment re: "unsourcable", I think it's worth noting that the only person to have contributed to this article to any significant degree is the subject himself. If the subject has been unable to provide sourcing for basic info like his date of birth, place of birth, and details of his family history and educational history, then I think it's reasonable to assume that those details are indeed "unsourcable". Adding [citation needed] to that sort of thing would just be overly optimistic.
So, it seems to me that there are genuine issues on the sourcing here for about 50% of the material in the current article. That being the case, I would support your secondary suggestion of draftify.
I take on board also the comments below re: reviews and WP:NAUTHOR. Axad12 ( talk) 11:34, 1 August 2024 (UTC) reply

If you check the article history, all content is pretty obviously written by employees of the organization that published this journal. It does not seem notable, it was self-published and every source listed is also self-published (their own website or press releases), except for Worldcat which just confirms the journal existed for one year and is archived in one library in the whole world. If you Google it's just unrelated things and self-promotion. Not seeing any legitimate third-party sources to meet Wikipedia inclusion standards. Here2rewrite ( talk) 16:24, 30 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Delete I searched Google for sources with "transaction advisors" and "journal" and excluding material on their own website and anything with the PR phrases "prestigious technical journal" and "prestigious new technical journal". It did yield three publications [4] [5] [6] that cite it as a reference (one, from the snippet displayed, might not have been, but the other two did include its ISSN and did clearly appear to be citing it). (Find sources:  Google ( books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

There is a "Carefree Dr" in the vicinity, but other than that there is no record of the spot on maps until it got back-added from a FIPS listing, which should almost count as a self-citation. Anyway, there's nothing there until 1998, when the main distribution warehouse of Jasper Engines was erected spang on the location. I'm guessing "Carefree" was actually someone's farm but at any rate there's no town and never was. Mangoe ( talk) 13:19, 30 July 2024 (UTC) reply

I don't suppose you can find something that defines the boundaries of this supposed town? Looking at aerials from the period, I'm not seeing anything, certainly not at the GNIS spot, until the Jasper warehouse is erected; there's some commercial stuff on the south side of the interchange, but hardly a town. At this point the thing looks like some sort of fraud, but we're stuck with nothing but very primary sources. Mangoe ( talk) 20:22, 30 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Two more recent sources mention the town, WTHR reporting [10], and the Indy Star [11]. A veterans center nearby described it as their "Carefree location" [12]. The nearby Madison Courier also consistently describes events taking place in Carefree [13], and a magazine from the neighboring county includes references to Carefree [14]. A few obits people having been born in or lived in Carefree [15] [16]. It seems like locals consider this place to exist. Cerebral726 (talk) 14:00, 31 July 2024 (UTC) reply
There's also some remnant signs of a town. An old smoke shop, a car salvage, a Carefree Truck Stop. Cerebral726 (talk) 14:18, 31 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Well, the truck stop is mentioned in the case and appears to be the whole reason behind the incorporation attempt. I would not be surprised to learn that the other businesses in the area were also owned by incorporation petitioners. My guess is that they saw some political advantage for their businesses but screwed it up. What is quite clear is that (a) the location in GNIS is just wrong, and (b) there's no Carefree residential area: the closest thing appears to be the mobile homes that now occupy what apparently was originally supposed to be a KOA (and may have been). Before the interchange was built and the businesses appeared, there was nothing.
This is actually an interesting story for a local reporter to write up, but there's obviously more research needed, including looking at the court documents and interviewing locals. If I lived where I could get at the appropriate libraries I might consider doing it, but I'm several states away. As it is, this isn't in our purview. And I don't know how we write an article that says "not actually a town, maybe some sort of business maneuver, at any rate just a locale". Mangoe ( talk) 15:44, 31 July 2024 (UTC) reply
  • Weak delete I searched the full archives of the Courier-Journal (the nearest major newspaper). Gotta love a town first mentioned in classified ads "Builder Inquiries welcome! Carefree, Indiana! A New Town with a future!" (10/28/1977) Then the same ad ran 83 more times. Then the place was mentioned five more times in classified ads in the 80s and 90s selling or renting land. This, combined with the court case mentioned above, would seem to suggest this was more of an attempted real estate development than an actual incorporated town. But people called the area Carefree for a while, perhaps because of the 1970s advertisements. Weak delete because I only looked in the one newspaper database, although that paper did write a lot about the towns in that area. -- Here2rewrite ( talk) 13:11, 31 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Long list of sources consists of press releases, "articles" which upon closer inspection are paid for / press releases as well, awards of dubious notability, databases, ... Their Allmusic listings [23] have no reviews, there's even only one record with one user rating. Absolutely no sign of any notability (no better sources found online either), and likely a WP:COI creation (the only other article by same editor is Alonzo Black, presumably the father or grandfather of the founder of this record label). Fram ( talk) 16:57, 30 July 2024 (UTC) reply

There are record labels listed here: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_record_labels that have a lot less notability. The press releases can be removed and that is fine and understandable. Mixedmdman ( talk) 17:15, 30 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Doing research on the initial article led to finding another topic to add. That is why there is a relation to the two articles. If you literally go to Google and type in the name of the first article you will find information about the second. I went through the guidelines and it appeared to be a topic worth an article when I compared it to other articles that are similar. Mixedmdman ( talk) 17:52, 30 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Added notability citations and information. Has been the subject of multiple published works appearing in sources that not self-published and independent of the subject. Has been on a country's national music chart. Has released albums with major record label distribution as an independent label with a history of more than a few years with a roster of multiple performers. Has won or been nominated for music awards. Has won in a music competition. Has been placed in rotation by a music network. It meets numerous criteria. Appears to fail WP:NBIO - while it does have a piece of significant coverage, the InfoWorld article, the others are just announcements and primary source interviews without substantive discussion. It does not pass WP:NARTIST either due to the fact he was just a co-developer or director of most games he made. When the article was first made it also failed NBIO and does not seem to have remedied that situation. Upon review of article and its sources, the person in question does not meet the notability guidelines in question: the person is not (1) cited by 3rd party sources other than websites that repeat his bio as an official founder of Samuel Adams beer (2) known for originating a new concept [see point #1] (3) become a significant monument, etc. (4) He is not cited as by peers and 3rd party sources for the work that is well-known or significant. ApLundell ( talk) 05:57, 21 July 2024 (UTC) reply
In the spirit of WP:GD I'm going to suggest that we pursue a constructive alternative such as improving or cleaning up the article. Two main reasons (1) Being one of the Samuel Adams founders both within the beverage field and just generally is definitely a major contribution. It looks he was not the frontman, but, indeed, he's been recognized by multiple secondary sources as being a founder and his involvement in various beverage investments is notable enough to be topic of headlines. As you probably know, media outlets have full control over headlines, which means that these media outlets viewed his involvement as "the story". On a more basic level, Samuel Adams is also billion dollar major conglomerate, it's widely recognized, and is part of the American social milieu (2) I digged into other secondary sources and there's quite a few other significant achievements such as being one of the people who started GT Interactive, which launched DOOM (a major video game) (3) This nomination was a careless mistake on my part so it's kind of a fluke nomination. My apologies again to all for that bonehead error and for wasting folks time reviewing this!
re: Harry Rubin (virologist) Even though I intended to nominate it, I also now lean towards keeping it. Mostly because his achievements within his specific domain are quite significant.

After extensive searching for WP:SIGCOV in multiple newspaper archives, I believe the subject lacks the coverage needed to meet the WP:GNG. This obit [ [28]] is rather short and doesn't make mention of his NFL career. Besides the obit, there are some passing/routine mentions like [ [29]], [ [30]], [ [31]] and [ [32]] but from what I see it is all trivial. While the subject played 16 NFL games, they took place in the early years of the league when the popularity of the league was nowhere near what it is today. Najarian has been vocal about advocating Armenian-American issues – Glendale has one of the largest Armenian communities outside Armenia (and this Los Angeles Times article where he is quoted is just the tip of the iceberg) – and an initial 15-minute search yielded coverage of his meetings with the prime minister of Armenia, and he is also frequently covered in the Armenian-American community press extending beyond Glendale. It will take a long time to sort through all the coverage to identify the "best 3", but this is more a case of having to spend time to search, sort, assess and improve, rather than agonizing that this four-time mayor and councilmember of Glendale has been completely ignored by the media outside of Glendale.) Cielquiparle ( talk) 06:10, 18 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Here is another one: "Najarian gets presidential welcome in Armenia" which appeared in both the Los Angeles Times and the Glendale News-Press. Cielquiparle ( talk) 06:23, 18 July 2024 (UTC) reply
Not every local official is automatically notable. IT's absolutely worth pointing out that he's received no coverage outside of Glendale. His meeting with the president of Armenia helps, but it doesn't automatically entitle him to a Wikipedia page (even if this meeting was extremely notable, which doesn't seem to be the case, it still wouldn't make Najarian himself notable, per WP:1E). Him being "mentioned" in an LA Times article is also not especially convincing. BottleOfChocolateMilk ( talk) 02:26, 19 July 2024 (UTC) reply
That's hardly WP:1E if his official visits to Armenia were covered in both 2010 and 2018. Anyway in future I would recommend trying search engines other than Google. A quick Google search will tell you it doesn't function very well anymore as a search engine. Cielquiparle ( talk) 03:17, 19 July 2024 (UTC) reply
One can find articles that are more in-depth than mentions by searching site:latimes.com "ara najarian" on Google, such as Ara Najarian tapped as Glendale mayor for the fourth time. toweli ( talk) 03:30, 19 July 2024 (UTC) reply
@ Toweli: I wouldn't call that "in-depth" coverage, it's a pretty short article about him becoming mayor. Seems pretty run of the mill to me. BottleOfChocolateMilk ( talk) 04:58, 19 July 2024 (UTC) reply
I didn't say that it was in-depth, I said that it was more in-depth than mentions. I'm not sure whether he's notable or not, because I haven't really looked much. That's why I didn't write "keep". toweli ( talk) 05:01, 19 July 2024 (UTC) reply

Okay, this will be thorough on this one, since lots of these mayoral election deletions have ended as trainwrecks for me. This article is a vialation of WP:NEVENT, as it fails to have significant lasting coverage that fails to qualify. THERE IS NO AUTOMATIC NOTABILITY FOR MAYORAL ELECTIONS, as shown here, here, here, here, and here of articles of similar size or larger to Allentown.

A quick WP:BEFORE fails to find any significant lasting coverage as well on Google or ProQuest.

Now, it looks like the article is long, so it must have good sources? Not to establish notability. Let's see if any of these sources match the description of "An event is presumed to be notable if it has lasting major consequences or affects a major geographical scope, or receives significant non-routine coverage that persists over a period of time. Coverage should be in multiple reliable sources with national or global scope." per WP:EVENT.

Source assessment table: prepared by User:1ctinus
Source Independent? Reliable? Significant coverage? Count source toward GNG?
https://www.mcall.com/2016/10/14/frank-fischl-decorated-air-force-pilot-and-former-allentown-mayor-dies-at-89/ ~ Yes No Local obituary, mentions the election for a single sentence No
https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/284052961/ ~ Yes No WP:ROUTINE mill coverage about a TV program/debate No
https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/280057542/ ~ ? No WP:PRIMARY No
https://www.upi.com/Archives/1981/08/12/Political-contribution-from-the-grave/1905366436800/ Yes Yes No No coverage at all? The citation says "Daddona's unsuccessful 1969 campaign", not 1977. Either way, its barely lasting coverage, just an offhand sentence in a UPI article. No
https://www.mcall.com/2004/12/12/whatever-became-of-former-allentown-mayor-frank-fischl/ Yes Yes No Scope of the coverage of the election in the article is "Fischl beat out incumbent Joe Daddona. Daddona later succeeded Fischl, who didn’t seek a second term.". While it is lasting, this is not significant. No
https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/283995190/ Yes Yes No NOT ABOUT THE ELECTION, BUT ABOUT FISCH DECLINING TO RERUN No
This table may not be a final or consensus view; it may summarize developing consensus, or reflect assessments of a single editor. Created using {{ source assess table}}.

If deletion seems too much, I propose two alternatives:

  • Merge all the Allentown mayoral election articles for future maintainability and navigability
  • (which is better in my opinion). Redirect to Frank Fischl, which most of the coverage seems to be on.

Before I end, a quick note to administrators and voters: please remember to use actual Wikipedia policy instead of using or endorsing arguments like "I like Pennsylvania history, so this must be important" or "this is useful information". These are both arguments to avoid in deletion discussions. Wikipedia is not a database, or an indiscriminate collection of information. I am limiting this to one article at a time to avoid a trainwreck nomination. -1ctinus📝 🗨 19:05, 29 July 2024 (UTC) reply

No Depression is reliable source. It is a highly respected music magazine. MarySue Twohy is program director at Sirius XM. Folk Dj is a international organization with a radio station It's part of Folk Alliance International. I believe he meets the criteria for having a single on national music chart if you consider Folk Alliance International https://www.folkradio.org/ Currently his new record is currently #24 on this chart. Two of his vidoes for singles were reviewed by Americana Highways, another respectable music publication although they are not listed in this article. The festivals that he won or was finalist are national competitions Lyle Lovett and Nanci Griffith were finalists at Kerrville. Most of the other references such as who he performed with were added to support a statement as being true. I agree it needs to be updated, but I not deleted. Performer Research ( talk) 16:38, 16 July 2024 (UTC) reply
I don't think Folk Alliance International would be considered a valid chart as I would assume it falls under SINGLEVENDOR. No Depression should be reliable and Americana Highways is as far as I know (bit surprised to see neither listed at RSMUSIC), but it's still a bit limited. This could be turned around though. After extensive searching for WP:SIGCOV in multiple newspaper archives, I believe the subject lacks the coverage needed to meet the WP:GNG. This obit [ [40]] is rather short and doesn't make mention of his NFL career. Besides the obit, there are some passing/routine mentions like [ [41]], [ [42]], [ [43]] and [ [44]] but from what I see it is all trivial. While the subject played 16 NFL games, they took place in the early years of the league when the popularity of the league was nowhere near what it is today.
