This wikiproject is intended to enhance and build upon our collective understanding of historical ecology both on a global and local scale by improving the quality and quantity of wikipedia articles pertaining to historical ecology. We hope to develop articles that focus on specific regions by encouraging project members and the public to study and write articles on the history of their environments and the history of human interaction with these environments. Over time we hope that this wikiproject will lead to bioregion-specific information over a wide range of ecosystems allowing people access to information that will allow a greater understanding of the historical interactions of people and their regional environments. With an improved and more accurate understanding of historical ecology, we hope that greater strides can be made in the execution of permaculture and other sustainable projects. We recognize the importance of historical ecology in education, especially in grades K-12, and a page devoted to historical ecology educational techniques and lesson plans will therefore be an important part of this project.

The primary goal of this proposed wikiproject is to add sections on historical ecology to existing pages for counties in the U.S. For example, since we are from Jefferson County, AL, we are working on a section on the historical ecology of Jefferson County. Such information is as vital to understanding the history of a place as the history of interactions among human groups. Such information can also help citizens in particular places make better decisions regarding environmental management as we begin to deal with the consequences of climate change. Eventually, we hope that this project would expand beyond the U.S. to include regions from all over the world. Until then, we hope to accomplish the following:
