RfC on this topic broken off by user:Philip Baird Shearer, proclaiming Wikipedia:Naming conventions (hockey) to be a guideline, citing Amendments to a guideline should be discussed on its talk page, not on a new page

This means that the vote below is concluded on a "keep as guideline and work on it according to guideline methods, as quoted by Philip: Amendments to a guideline should be discussed on its talk page, not on a new page -- Francis Schonken 00:04, 4 March 2006 (UTC) reply

Francis, you are the only wikipedian on record as of 12:54, 4 March 2006 (UTC) to maintain that Wikipedia:Naming conventions (hockey) is a guideline. Everyone else is on record on its talk page as either considering it a proposal or outright opposing it. The very vote preserved on this page, partial as it may be, shows 2 in favor and 5 opposed in the matter of adoption of this naming convention. There is no consensus, notwithstanding your cutting and pasting of discussion, on the use of diacritics in English Wikipedia hockey-related articles. The serious objections to diacritics have to do with searching within article texts using English alphabet only. Unfortunately, other than keeping around lists of anglicized spellings of foreign players' names, there is no good solution. Hockey players are no different from other people listed in the Wikipedia, and the articles with their names are subject to the same strictures and limitations in search as those of other foreigners whose names feature diacritics. -- Mareklug talk 12:54, 4 March 2006 (UTC) reply

Question

Should the proposal become a naming conventions guideline?

Position 1

Yes, there are enough valid reasons showing in:

to justify that Wikipedia:Naming conventions (hockey) would become a naming convention.

Position 2

No, all the discussion has been limited to NHL Ice hockey. This should be reflected in the proposal. Also, making an exception for Swedes and only Swedes seems strange.

  3. HJV 22:22, 3 March 2006 (UTC). No special convention, but I don't see the point of treating Swedes differently (it's POV). As most other articles with ä, ö, etc appear to include that ä's and the ö's in the name, why shouldn't hockey articles then? reply

Position 3

No, there should be no separate convention on how to name hockey (player) articles. These articles should follow other naming conventions and not any special hockey (player) convention.
