User:Krzyzowiec/Userboxes/RAC ( | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

This userbox expresses support for Rock Against Communism (RAC), which according to its accompanying article was a series of white power/white supremacist rock concerts, and also serves as a "catch-all term for music with racist lyrics as well as a specific genre of rock music derived from Oi!. The lyrics can focus on racism and antisemitism, though this depends on the band." This is supported by a reference to an entry published by the Anti-Defamation League, which states the following:

Rock Against Communism (RAC) is a euphemism used to refer to several types of white power/hate music (typically Oi! or hatecore punk). Despite its name, RAC more often than not contains no references to "Communism" at all, but focuses on racism and anti-Semitism. The term emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s, after rock music promoters in Great Britain put on a series of "Rock against Racism" concerts. In response, various white supremacist bands led by Ian Stuart and Skrewdriver held "Rock Against Communism" concerts. The term eventually became used as a euphemism for racist Oi! music and later also hatecore punk and some other styles of hate music.

Does this userbox therefore qualify as a violation of WP:POLEMIC? Although one could theoretically enjoy the music without explicitly agreeing with hateful messaging therein, it seems unlikely. In searching for similar userboxes/some sort of precedent, I was unable to find any userboxes that express support for white supremacy, Neo-Nazism, etc., nor was I able to find any userboxes expressing an affinity for National Socialist black metal (which, compared to RAC, I would argue is an example of Neo-Nazi music with a larger fanbase).

Additional notes: I took a look through the list of users who have this RAC userbox on their userpage, and none of them have been active contributors past 2019. I would notify the user who created this userbox, Krzyzowiec, of this discussion (interestingly, they appear to have made an anti-Nazism userbox as well), but they were blocked indefinitely in 2013 due to suspected sockpuppetry. — Matthew  / ( talk) 14:54, 1 June 2023 (UTC) reply

@ WaltCip: Was not aware of that essay, thank you. I wouldn't mind if that became a guideline, frankly. — Matthew  / ( talk) 19:57, 1 June 2023 (UTC) reply

May I just add here that we also have a userbox for self-identified "Social Darwinists" which really ought to be deleted for the same reason. Ideally should get its own MfD of course, I only bring it up specifically here as many of the users who have this userbox also have the one being discussed (I wonder why...) User:AdorableRuffian/Userboxes/BritishNationalParty (which also has some overlap) def needs to go as well for similar reasons. StrexcorpEmployee ( talk) 21:20, 6 June 2023 (UTC) reply

@ StrexcorpEmployee: I fully agree with you that those two userboxes should be deleted as well, especially the BNP userbox; expressing support for a party like BNP is utterly unacceptable here. Also, I agree that it is no coincidence at all that certain users, who have the RAC and the BNP userboxes, are self-identifying as "Social Darwinists". The connection is quite obvious to me. — Sundostund mppria ( talk / contribs) 01:48, 7 June 2023 (UTC) reply
