Wikipedia:miscellany For Deletion Current Events: Regional Pages

The result of the debate was Soft Redirect. These pages have all been marked as {{ historical}} as they have all become inactive as per the discussion below, and contain rather complex syntax that if needed again could be easily revived. Current events: Regional pages

I'm nominating the following pages for deletion:

These Regional news page are inactive and haven't had any news for the past year, except for links to Wikinews. Since Wikipedia is not Wikinews, I believe they should be deleted -- Eklipse ( talk) 20:25, 15 October 2008 (UTC) reply

Keep - Im sure if you found some users in the wikiprojects they represent, then they could easily keep these up to date. However I do think some pages can be merged like Poland & the UK into Europe. - Marcusmax( speak) 21:41, 15 October 2008 (UTC) reply
Delete I found this page while trying to find the last election debate wikipedia article. If the US page contains nothing but a list of wikinews articles, 1 month from an election, then there is clearly no interest in maintaining them. Regional lists of current wikinews should be, and I would hope already is, a job for wikinews. MickMacNee ( talk) 23:52, 15 October 2008 (UTC) reply
- It is, long since. Wikinews has had regional portals for a long time, far longer than these pages have even existed. For example: The Wikinews U.S. portal pre-dates the aforelinked U.S. page by one and a quarter years, having existed since April 2005. Uncle G ( talk) 17:04, 16 October 2008 (UTC) reply
Agree with nom that "current events" do not belong in wikipedia, however, other options should be explored before deletion. Perhaps: Redirect all to Portal:Current events (which seems to be functioning OK); move to Portal:Current Events of 2008/Africa, for example; or archive. Archive all as "This page is currently inactive and is retained as a historical archive.", and soft/hard redirect to Portal:Current events, similar to the result at Wikipedia:Village pump (assistance). I agree with SmokeyJoe that contents and histories from years past remain useful as a timeline of notable evnts and related articles in the regions when they were being maintained, such as here and here. Delete. There was a time when regional/national news pages were regularly maintained and contributed something to Wikipedia, but people lost interest in them and they serve no purpose any longer. To a large extent, they've been replaced by news panels in geographical portals.- gadfium 18:46, 19 October 2008 (UTC) reply
Weak Delete. I believe that current events coverage is a major strength of Wikipedia and is popular with readers. However, given that people are not updating them, I believe that they are not serving a purpose currently. Perhaps they should be given a three month term of review with the relevant Wikiprojects notified of this proposal to get their views. Capitalistroadster ( talk) 18:51, 19 October 2008 (UTC) reply

Delete the rest. Reasons: China (largely Weird Asia News), Europe (not much in history except European portal links, which are also collected at P:B), Israel (2 months of current events), Middle East (news only for 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, extensively covered and sourced at Timeline of the 2006 Lebanon War), Latin America (very short history-nothing there), Poland (very short history-nothing there), UK (extensive news only for 2 months), US (news for 1 1/2 months) -- Galatee ( talk) 10:28, 21 October 2008 (UTC) reply

Delete - I notified the Portal:Current events project itself [1] and the major contributors of that portal project [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] on 19 October 2008 in hopes of seeing whether the portal had use for the pages. The response from the project members above seems to be delete. As for marking historical, not every page has historical interest and there does not seem to be any Wikipedia historical interest to these pages. -- Suntag ☼ 18:14, 21 October 2008 (UTC) reply
- Comment. Why not redirect them all to Portal:Current events? That's very active and a natural target for people clicking a link to regional news, as they're all represented to some degree. I remember reading that a redirect to an appropriate page is better than looking at a deletion log, and there is historical relevance for the pages with archived news items. Two days is short notice for Portal talk:Current events, as it's lightly trafficked in comparison to Portal:Current events. Gotyear ( talk) 22:42, 21 October 2008 (UTC) reply
  - Comment. I would agree with a #REDIRECT Portal:Current events on all and removing them from Portal:Current events/News Browser. This way the no-longer-updated pages are removed from Current events, any other links will now redirect to Current events, and the histories of when they were updated (with varying levels of updates) are still accessible from the remaining links.
