A warped spiral galaxy--warped as a result of colliding with another galaxy. After the other galaxy is completely absorbed, the distortion will disappear. The process typically takes millions of years.
This is a rare picture of a warped galaxy. It would provide
an excellent illustration of the distortion caused by colliding galaxies,
discussed in the entry
Galaxy formation and evolution under the spiral galaxy heading. The image was taken by the Hubble telescope.
