Reason
High quality painting, of an elaborate sophistication and complexity by Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder ( 1573 – 1621) a highly successful
still life painter of the
Dutch Golden Age. When tulips became a luxury item, a profusion of varieties followed, like the ones in the painting, white and yellow with red strips. These paintings are valuable as historic documents for botanical purposes, since the flowers are depicted with great accuracy.
