Hey guys!
I'm dropping you a note because you filled out the New Page Patrol survey, and indicated you'd be interested in being contacted about follow-up work. This is to notify you that we've finally released both the initial documentation about the project and also the engagement strategy, which sets out how we plan to work with the community on this. Please give both a read, and leave any comments or suggestions you have on the talkpage, on my talkpage, or in my inbox - okeyeswikimedia.org.
It's awesome to finally get to start work on this! :). Okeyes (WMF) ( talk) 02:40, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update
Greetings from the
Guild of Copy Editors
March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter. Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us! Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far. Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers. Your drive coordinators – Dianna ( talk), Stfg ( talk), and Dank ( talk)To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list. |
Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive
Greetings from the
Guild of Copy Editors
March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter. Participation Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months. Progress report During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here. When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{ GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators. Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May. Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us! Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles. Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! The bat species in your photo on Wikimedia ( http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dead_Bat.jpg#file) is the big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus. It also appears to be a juvenile bat (you can tell by the proportion of ears to head and body size).

You were supportive of the idea that Jehochman proposed: "A message is most effective when it matches the format of the media. We're an encyclopedia. On Feb 11, I suggest we fill our front page with articles, blurbs and news about mass spying and privacy. That will send a strong message, and help educate people. It's sort of like what we do on April 1, except serious instead of foolish."
Since this proposal received so much support, I and several others have done our best to begin the process of implementation. That said, the proposal is very controversial with Main Page insiders who have, understandably, objections that boil down to WP:NOTADVOCATE.
It's valuable to have feedback from people who oppose any deviation from the status quo, but we really need feedback from people who understood Jehochman idea, supported it, and could tell us whether we're succeeding in "implementing the vision" that Jehochman laid out and how to improve the proposal.
If you have the time, would you lend your view over at Wikipedia:Surveillance awareness day. If you want to see a list of custom content that could be available, we have a Arbitrary mockup #2, that shows lots of proposed content on one page.
Your feedback is most appreciated. -- HectorMoffet ( talk) 09:55, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Hey Kevin-
Thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure, in the future, to follow the guidelines you linked to. They were very helpful. I didn't realize that alumni had to be notable on a scale larger than those viewing the page; the people that were listed as alumni were very notable in their community and the regional area. Sorry for any confusions, misunderstandings, consternations, frustrations, palpitations, constipations, discombobulations, or problems. I think that there is a problem with citing Clarke as a source.
Perhaps my edit was premature. However, he is apparently retired from the US government / NSA and in no position to know what they knew. At least, as far as Wikipedia reflects.
Therefore, if my edit is not acceptable, I think he should not be mentioned at all. I didn't delete information, I added it. He is being cited as an authority, while the (Wikipedia) record shows him to be not in a position to know.
If I made minor transgressions against the terms of service, it was not my intention. I stated fact (as far as I know it).
I don't yet have a Wikipedia account but I have used WP for years. Perhaps sometime I will create an account.

Hi SuperHamster! From the article:
Collapsed to save space |
---|
The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it. |
In December, a five-member advisory panel convened to review electronic surveillance policy urged the White House to sharply curtail the use of undisclosed flaws and stop undercutting encryption standards. The panel included former White House cybersecurity advisor Richard Clarke. In late February, a senior White House official said the Obama administration was intensively studying both issues. The administration statements issued on Friday confirmed that the review had already "reinvigorated an interagency process for deciding when to share vulnerabilities" on a case-by-case basis. The activities of the NSA have come under sharp scrutiny since former agency contractor Edward Snowden leaked numerous documents exposing expansive U.S. surveillance efforts. Even before Snowden's emergence, former officials, including Clarke, told Reuters that offensive and spying considerations had dominated inside the NSA, causing it to withhold information instead of warning the public about new flaws. Clarke told Reuters Friday that the NSA had not known of Heartbleed. |
Based on the article you have provided, I still think Clarke should not be cited as an authoritive source for the Heartbleed article. From what I gather this former Bush advisor apparently said some things to Obama's administration. I'm not even going to deal with Snowden in this comment. It's not my intention to split hairs. But seriously, Clarke's claim that the NSA "did not know" doesn't carry weight to me because he was apparently inactive/retired/"not in the know" of NSA activities during the timeframe of March 2012 - April 2014.
I like open source software and support it in principle. However, delving into (and understanding millions/billions of lines of) code is not something most people do. I don't blame Obama nor Bush for an OpenSSL vulnerability that came to be by some (allegedly lone) developer. Certainly, Bush was not President during the time this vulnerability was in the wild. Nonetheless, I haven't seen evidence that Clarke was in a position to know what the NSA (nor KGB, nor MOSSAD, etc) was up to. Consequentially, I feel it is inappropriate to consider his claim as evidence that the NSA did not know. Again, in light of the present fact that Wikipedia does not show him to be in a position to know. Although the reasoning is a tad circular, I similarly take my own grandparents' opinions on "cybersecurity" with a grain of salt. In other words, [(better) source needed]

G'day, I am very new to Wikipedia, and still trying to work out how to use it, so appreciate your advice : )
Certainly I would not want to add any content to Johnny Appleseed's page lightly, as he is a hugely important historical figure.
I felt that as the Cannabis issue is such a huge one now, and also that the particular uTube video was professionally produced and had a good message that it was worthy of including.
My role is as CEO of the first Cannabis Medicine company in Australia, hence my interest tascann.com.au
If in time it becomes more prominent (as the video is currently very new) can we consider including on the page?
Cheers, Troy-- Troylangman ( talk) 06:21, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Let's say there was a fish. Perhaps his name might be, oh I don't know...FREDDIE? Now let's say this fish lives in a post-apocylyptic world where fish, cars, and foxes can talk. Now let's imagine that this apocalypse was brought upon by none only than SAM. PAJAMA SAM, that is. Let's say he failed to bring peace to the world of the food and they launched an all out war on humanity. All that's left is cars, fish, and foxes. Now let's furthermore assume that this history were to be documented by, hmm I don't know, a GAME company maybe called Humongous Entertainment (from here on out referred to as He, which works out considering we also refer to God as He, so they are one and the same). He documents this history in a series of games aimed at the young minds of our current population, seeking to save their innocent souls before inevitable destruction. Hmmm, yes that would be interesting, interesting indeed. He would have created a world and brought life to it, and then told the story to young children of a new civilization. He is truly a good God. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 164.107.94.255 ( talk) 07:25, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

I don't know how to phrase things, I am an English major and my usage of descriptive words are no different the the articles that I have seen on the Musician Pete Townshend of the Who or the artist (Prince).
I really don't understand why you have rejected the article...I use to work in the music industry for more than 20 years and use to be a radio announcer...
The things I am writing are from descriptions of these peoples work from their peers...
How is it suppose to read...I am simply in the beginning stages of working on this...it is going to take me more time to build each of the members profiles, which I intend to do, inclusive of each of these gentlemans works with EVERY recording artist they have worked with...THAT is why I FIRST put each of their PRIVATE wiki articles as reference links so what I have said...is verifiable if only by that...
Please let me know what I need to do...

Thank you so much for your help and very detailed answer...the things that I list are basically from Youtube "talk" vids regarding the individuals by their peers in the industry that have used them in their concerts. So would it suffice if I said the "information came from say...George Duke on such and such a date and then refer the youtube vid? And since it came directly from his own mouth would that be considered "viable" are any of the youtube vids considered viable?? And with some of the others I have researched their backgrounds on the net, where, once again...there are things in print...I took a look at what you suggested, Halo, and I sort of understand what you mean. Thanks for that as well. I am not quite sure how to "attach" the reliable sources... you know, with the numbers after the information and the little "bubble pops up" :).
One of the other guys who let me know what I needed to do...also told me I was "emotionally" invested in the article...I kinda am, from what I have heard through the grapevine....one of the guys is having a hard time in his life and kinda unstable right now...so I was really attempting to do this, I guess in a way...to give some hope and let them see what others think, in the industry about them...
Is it also ok to quote some of the fans...like the news interviews folks to create intrest??
Thank you again SuperHamster (I use to have one when I was a kid) lol... appreciate your help..and if you'd be kind enough to school me on how to do those little number references I would be very grateful...

You just commented back on my verified twitter account edit and said it read like an essay (which I am trying to fix! it's finals week so I am used to writing essays). But also you said my sources aren't reliable, should I use sources from online newspapers? Is it possible to request that a Wikipedia peer writes this article for Armagard, because no matter how much I edit it according to the 'rules' those rules cannot be met, probably because I work for the company. Despite trying to implement the same 'tone' used by Hewlett Packard & Coca Cola, I find the article constantly refused. Because we only receive generic responses, could a more specific answer be given re: the problems. It would help us here greatly.

Hello, I've been trying to create the MAB Community Services Wikipedia page and I understand that I need third-party reliable sources, however in the references I added third party websites mentioning MAB, including search engines and website posts about the organization, however they aren't present within the information from MAB so I didn't cite them within the Wikipedia post only in the references.
Do I need to cite them in the post for them to count? I just don't know what else I should do to make the post express its notability when I've already added outside references and that seems to be the main problem.

Greetings Kevin, you have a very nice wikipedia page and profile... congrats!!!
I have a frustrating issue here... I have created the page Miss Multiverse, it was deleted once before about a year ago, i don´t understand why if it has all the right references, no use of promotion, just facts, there are even winners of miss universe that have participated in Miss Multiverse whom have profiles on wikipedia... and its still deleted as if this beauty pageant does not exist.
There are many smaller beauty pageants listed on wikipedia, we are just not able to comprehend why this is happening, it almost feels as if enthusiasts or supporters of other pageants are deleting this one, it takes time to learn how to use wikipedia and frustrating to see someone just come and delete it.
I will appreciate your help enormously, if you would kindly take a look and figure out a solution.

Hi,
You placed a "speedy" tag on File:Bliss magazine final issue July 2014.jpg despite the fact it had already been marked with the correct "fair use" information by that point.
The file was very (and I mean *very*) briefly labelled as an "own work" before the "fair use" info was placed on top of it as- quite bluntly- it's simpler and involves less pointless jumping through hoops.
I would remove the "speedy" template myself, but strictly speaking I shouldn't as it's my upload, and I've no intention of giving some over-officious editor an excuse to whine about that.
Can you please remove this, thank you.
