Request reason:

Hello I am an employee with a high school. I attempted to replace inaccurate information and update new information on our page I was blocked. I have created an account with a verified email from our organization that is represented on the page I was trying to edit. Please let me know what I can do because I would like to be able to update information to this page going forward Pghsathletics ( talk) 12:44, 21 April 2020 (UTC) reply

Decline reason:

Hello Pghsathletics, role accounts are not permitted on Wikipedia. Your account has been blocked because it represents an organization, which violates our username policy. You can not be unblocked without also proposing a new username that represents you as an individual person.

However, your username is not the only concern here. Your attempted edits and your unblock appeal seem to indicate a fundamental misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is about.

  • Wikipedia articles are not owned by anyone. There is no verification process for you to edit Penns Grove High School as a representative. On the contrary, you have a conflict of interest and should not edit the article at all.
  • If you would like to request changes to the article, you can do so by clicking the "Talk" tab at the top of Penns Grove High School, which will lead you to the article's talk page, Talk:Penns Grove High School. At the top of the talk page, there is an orange warning box. It contains the link "request corrections on or suggest content", which you may like to use.
  • Wikipedia has very strict requirements about paid editing. See WP:PAID. It is your job, not ours, to read and understand these conditions, and to adhere to them. Before being blocked, you have failed to do so. Slowly, we are getting towards a proper disclosure. However, you have still not even disclosed which high school you are employed at.
  • Wikipedia has very strict requirements about paid editing; I am unsure if they apply to this situation. Please see the section "Overview" below for an overview of the concerns. The above bullet point was unfriendly and unnecessary.

Instead of requiring other editors to read between the lines, please make clear statements. Instead of requiring other editors to interpret your words, please be precise. Unequivocally agree not to edit the article Penns Grove High School directly again. Please clearly agree to request any changes on the talk page, Talk:Penns Grove High School, instead of making them directly. Please suggest a new username that conforms to the username policy.

Please see the section "Overview" below for a less accusative version of the above unnecessary paragraph.

This appeal has been declined, but you are welcome to create a new one that properly addresses these issues. See the guide for appealing blocks first, then add {{ unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} below.

Best regards,
~ ToBeFree ( talk) 13:12, 21 April 2020 (UTC) reply

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{ unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

So who is responsible for inaccurate and unverified information with no sources. I see things that are factually inaccurate and I was trying to enhance a page by adding sourced materials that is accurate. Pghsathletics ( talk) 14:12, 21 April 2020 (UTC) reply

Sorry, Pghsathletics, I have rewritten two paragraphs in the "Decline reason" above. The old text is struck through, the new text is underlined. My response has been unnecessarily accusative.
To answer your question, removing incorrect information is fine; adding new information can be problematic. When you are unblocked: If something is factually incorrect, you are allowed to remove it directly, but please be careful when doing so, and consider requesting an edit on the talk page of the article instead. If you would like to add new text, please always propose the addition on the talk page of the article. See WP:ORGFAQ, and the "Overview" below, for details. ~ ToBeFree ( talk) 20:46, 22 April 2020 (UTC) reply

Requested username:

Request reason:

I am the Assistant Athletic Director at Penns Grove High School and I would like to update our school information, because quite a bit of it is currently not accurate. I have switched my name to a single person instead of a group to meet the guidelines of Wikipedia Pghsathletics ( talk) 13:44, 21 April 2020 (UTC) reply

Decline reason:

That doesn't meet our username policy either and doesn't address the reason for your block. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 13:59, 21 April 2020 (UTC) reply

So change my user name to John Emel, my actual name. Does that meet the user name agreements? Pghsathletics ( talk) 14:13, 21 April 2020 (UTC) reply

I have no edit but my IP addresses are blocked and I am unable to just creat a new account. What the solution for this? Pghsathletics ( talk) 15:59, 21 April 2020 (UTC) reply

Hi Pghsathletics, you had originally been able to create a new account, but I have removed this ability when I saw your unblock request. You are currently not allowed to create a new account yourself, and are required to appeal this block instead. Block evasion wouldn't help; the concerns that led to the block (and the rejection of the unblock requests) need to be addressed properly. ~ ToBeFree ( talk) 01:40, 22 April 2020 (UTC) reply
@ ToBeFree: Apologies, I'm the one who suggested that they create a new account, so there might have been some confusion there. -- King of 06:30, 22 April 2020 (UTC) reply

I’m not paid for anything? I noticed some information was incorrect as I use Wikipedia frequently for general information and informations sources. At this point I’m a little confused I was instructed to create a new account, after being instructed to change my name, and now I’m being asked to justify why I am blocked? Appealing a block, and addressing the reasons that led to it, is difficult on a mobile device. Please open /info/en/?search=User_talk:Pghsathletics on a desktop computer to get an overview of the situation. ~ ToBeFree ( talk) 09:30, 22 April 2020 (UTC) reply

Overview

Hi Pghsathletics,

the whole process and my answers have been chaotic, un-inviting and unfriendly; I'm sorry for that. I'll try to provide an overview of the situation below.

What has happened? (Timeline)

  • The account Pghsathletics was created.
  • The account Pghsathletics made edits to Penns Grove High School. These contained the text "online", which incorrectly triggered an automated filter that was meant to prevent a completely different type of edits on high school articles. The edits have incorrectly been prevented from ever appearing on the page.
  • The account Pghsathletics was blocked solely for its username, asking you to "simply create a new account", or to appeal the block. The reason for this block was WP:ORGNAME, a part of Wikipedia's username policy: "Usernames that unambiguously represent the name of a company, group, institution or product" are prohibited.
  • You chose to appeal the block, which would normally have been a mere formality. However, the block appeal was written in a way that concerned me (see the first "Decline reason"). To enforce a discussion about these concerns, and to prevent the simple creation of a new account, I have disabled the ability to create a new account.
  • You asked a question ("So who is responsible for inaccurate and unverified information...") that remained unanswered until now. Short answer: WP:ORGFAQ. Long answer: See below.
  • You requested a new username, "PGAD1", as the "Penns Grove Athletic Director 1".
  • The request was declined because your proposed name still does not comply with the requirements. It implies shared use. "Usernames that are names of posts within organizations, such as 'Secretary of the XY Foundation', are not permitted, as such a post may be held by different persons at different times." You must choose a name that represents you as an individual. It doesn't have to be your real name; a pseudonym is fine.
  • You proposed using your real name. This is possible, but please read WP:REALNAME before making this decision: "Consider carefully before creating an account in your real name or a nickname which might be traced to you, as these increase the potential for harassment, especially if you edit in controversial subject areas." If you would like the real name to be removed from this page, please edit this page, replace the name by "Name removed", then see WP:RFOS to request it to be removed from this page's history. You can still do this while blocked.
  • You probably attempted to create a new account, which is currently not possible. The ability to create an account has been disabled because there are open questions here, and I'd like you to answer them instead of simply creating a new account.
  • You noted that you are "not paid for anything". I'm not entirely sure about that; see below.

What needs to be done now?

  • Please create a new unblock request using the following code: {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}
  • In your unblock request, please clearly disclose your connection to your employer.
    • Who is your employer (you haven't specified the name of the high school yet)? I guess it's Penns Grove High School, but I had to read between the lines to notice this. Please be more specific.
    • Have you been asked to edit the Wikipedia article Penns Grove High School on behalf of the school, as an official representative? Then you are a paid editor, and need to say so clearly.
    • Are you editing Wikipedia in your free time? Then you seem to have overstated how "official" this account really is. This is a common pattern: Someone claims official representation, notices that it isn't a good thing on Wikipedia, and then denies official representation. We'll need to know how "official" your edits really are. If you are a teacher editing in their free time, who has never even told any colleague about their Wikipedia editing, then please say so. If the director has kindly asked you to deal with Wikipedia, please say so. We currently lack this important information, and all we need is clarity and openness.
  • You have a conflict of interest, and should clearly agree not to edit the Wikipedia article Penns Grove High School directly. Instead, when you are unblocked, you can click the "Talk" tab above the article. You'll see an orange warning box with a link, "request corrections on or suggest content". By clicking this link, you can easily request changes. In your unblock appeal, please clarify that you will do so instead of editing the article directly.

If you address these concerns in an unblock request, you will very likely be unblocked. There is no deadline for such an appeal; please take your time.

Thank you very much in advance and best regards,
~ ToBeFree ( talk) 21:00, 22 April 2020 (UTC) reply
