This section discusses a collaborative project I'm undertaking with a group of students from IUPUI's Museum Studies program to think about the digital presence of public art collections. We are starting with making Wikipedia articles for every piece of outdoor sculpture on our campus. I am documenting the basics of this process using a blog located at
http://publicartweb.tumblr.com.
Just FYI- I've been uploading all the IUPUI sculpture photos I have to Flickr, and there's a 100 MB photo limit per month. (i reached my limit already.)

That would be a great solution, but honestly, in the end I think it will not be necessary. I mean I've already uploaded about 50 pictures or so on a bunch of different sculptures, and if everyone uploads some more for their own sculptures, I doubt everyone will reach the limit. Meanwhile, I've been thinking that if by chance I have more pictures, I could email them to someone else in the class to upload for me, as a way to beat the Flickr system!

There's some pretty obscure public art out there that was created by neighborhood societies and the like; I remember getting off past my stop late one night on the north-bound 80 bus somewhere north of North Avenue but south of Silver Spring, and seeing a small WW1 monument that took up only slightly more space than a lightpole. I've never been able to find it again. --

Hi,
User:Bob the Wikipedian. Thanks for getting in touch! The various formal and informal roles within the "Wikipedia in Higher Education program" are a little confusing to me. Can you point me to resources to learn about the requirements and expectations for the Teaching Fellowship you mention? I initially listed myself on the Campus Ambassador page because I regularly use development of Wikipedia content in my teaching, and I actively consult with faculty throughout the U.S. on how to integrate the encyclopedia. I also wanted people on my campus to know that they could ask me for help, which has been effective. I would welcome the opportunity to do more, especially in a leadership capacity involving women contributors.

I can point you toward
outreach:Education, which is loaded with teaching resources for the program. Traditionally, one or two trained campus ambassadors will be assigned to assist you in teaching students to use Wikipedia and in helping you design a successful class project. As a regional ambassador, I'm responsible for making sure professors and campus ambassadors in the area meet up and get something planned. The project is integrated into your syllabus for the semester and usually takes the place of a term paper. I'd love to tell you more about our program; if you're still interested then shoot me an email at

yes, but i anticipate this being attacked as "inclusionist"; as seen in the examples, people persist in deletion, seeking one and then another reason to delete. as i was going along the Milwaukee list, i noticed there were ones with images deleted, and commons images that need to be migrated with "fair use" tag. the freedom of panorama makes me want to move to Amsterdam. the problem with ad hoc consensus here, is that no one wants to implement the housekeeping. btw, here's how i handled an address for a public work:

Please fill out our brief Teahouse survey
Teahouse logo
Hello fellow Wikipedian, the hardworking hosts and staff at
WP:Teahouse would like your feedback!
We have created a brief
survey intended to help us understand the experiences and impressions of veteran editors who have participated on the Teahouse. You are being selected to participate in our survey because you edited the Teahouse
Questions or
Guests pages some time during the last few months.
Hi! Welcome to the fourth issue of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter for the
Teahouse!
Teahouse pilot wraps up after 13 weeks After being piloted on English Wikipedia starting in February, the Teahouse wrapped up its pilot period on May 27, 2012. We expect this is just the beginning for the Teahouse and hope the project will continue to grow in the months to come!
Thank you and congratulations to all of the community members who participated - and continue to participate!
What you've all been waiting for:
Teahouse Pilot Report is released! We look forward to your feedback on the methodology and outcomes of this pilot project.
....and if a pilot report wasn't enough, the
Teahouse Pilot Metrics Report is out too! Dive into the numbers and survey results to learn about the impact the Teahouse has made on English Wikipedia.
Teahouse shows positive impact on new editor retention and engagement
409 new editors participated during the entire pilot period, with about 40 new editors participating in the Teahouse per week.
Two weeks after participating, 33% of Teahouse guests are still active on Wikipedia, as opposed to 11% of a similar control group.
New editors who participated in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles, make 7x more global edits, and 2x as much of their content survives on Wikipedia compared to the control group.
Women participate in the Teahouse 28% of Teahouse participants were women, up from 9% of editors on Wikipedia in general, good news for this project which aimed to have impact on the gender gap too - but still lots to be done here!
New opportunities await for the Teahouse in phase two as the Teahouse team and Wikipedia community examine ways to improve, scale, and sustain the project. Opportunities for future work include:
Automating or semi-automating systems such as invites, metrics and archiving
Experimenting with more ways for new editors to discover the Teahouse
Building out the social and peer-to-peer aspects further, including exploring ways to make answering questions easier, creating more ways for new editors to help each other and for all participants to acknowledge each other's efforts
Growing volunteer capacity, continuing to transfer Teahouse administration tasks to volunteers whenever possible, and looking for new ways to make maintenance and participation easier for everyone.
Want to know how you can lend a hand at the Teahouse? Become a host! Learn more about what makes the Teahouse different than other help spaces on Wikipedia and see how you can help new editors by visiting
here.
Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest
guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is really encouraging to new Wikipedians.

You're welcome! I only know a little about the architectural sculpture at Alverno. I recently saw an exhibition of photographs from the college archives which included an image of Adolph Roegner installing the sculpture of St. Francis on the main building. I was in Milwaukee in, i think 1990, when I learned about Roegner. Spent a very memorable few days tracking his work down. I visited Alverno in 2003 and took pictures of some of Parducci/Roegner's work then. I've been after Parducci since 1983 or so. I have corresponded with an archivist at Alverno ten years ago, but she (?) knew nothing about Parducci or Roegner. SO, time has no meaning.

the guys who died while building it (they were
Iron Workers Local 8 members).
The coverage I can find is mostly about the disaster, of course, rather than the statue itself.
Yes, I agree. Believe it or not, I'm working on it. There are articles in the MJS, OnMilwaukee, the Daily Reporter, and Post-Crescent. The story of that sculpture is actually really interesting, and I promise you'll be able to read all about it on Wikipedia soon! --

Hi! Welcome to the fifth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the

Guest activity increased in July. Questions are up from an average of 36 per week in June to 43 per week in July, and guest profile creation has also increased. This is likely a result of the
automatic invite experiments we started near the end of month, which seeks to lessen the burden on hosts and other volunteer who manually invite editors. During the last week of July, questions doubled in the Teahouse! (But don't let that deter you from
inviting editors to the Teahouse, please, there are still lots of new editors who haven't found Teahouse yet.)
More Teahouse hosts than ever. We had 12 new hosts sign up to participate at the Teahouse! We now have 35 hosts volunteering at the Teahouse. Feel free to stop by and see them all

Phase two update: Host sprint. In August, the Teahouse team plans to improve the host experience by developing a simpler new-host creation process, a better way of surfacing active hosts, and a host lounge renovation. Take a look at the plan and weigh in

Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.
Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since
HostBot's automated invite
trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to
six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.
New host process implemented which encourages anyone to get started as a Teahouse host in a few easy steps. Stop by the

Save the sculpture parks!
I stumbled on
List of sculpture parks when a noobie messed it up, trying in good faith to add an obscure Wisconsin sculpture park. The article is a sad, sad mess:
1) Lots of the places listed don't even have a red link because whoever added them was so new as not to know how to format the entry
2) Lots and lots of red links
3) Lots of external links, in violation of
WP:EL, sometimes combined with 1 or 2.
Could you and others who are more into public art articles take a hand here? It's really a shame in its current condition. A rule that some, but not by any means all, lists adopt, is that an entity doesn't go on the list if there isn't an article about it: one that meets the usual notability, sourcing and verifiabilty rules. --

Thanks for the suggestion, Mike! This article is one that I watch, and I can see your point. I'm not sure when the project you propose will make it to the front burner for me. I will try to improve the Wisconsin section at least, probably by also adding articles about the listed parks. --

Thanks for uploading File:SeaForm1964.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a
claim of fair use. However, it is currently
orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed.
You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see
our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "
my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on
criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you.

I try to steer clear of the drama, hence my cautious approach. I'm working on re-doing
List of public art in Milwaukee to work with the fancy new table system. Would you be willing to take a look at my

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give a page a different title by copying and pasting its content into
Lodgepole (sculpture). This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes.
Unfortunately, we will have to temporarily delete the new article you created under
speedy deletion criterion G6, so that the page you intended to move may be
properly moved in a way that will preserve its edit history. To avoid this problem in the future, please use the "Move" tab at the top of articles in order to re-title them.
Hi, and thank you for
your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give
User:Jgmikulay/WSPA a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "
cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the
page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.
In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the
"Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a
redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at
requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at
Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Please don't draft any more content here.Marcus Qwertyus (
