I think you have confused 'T1' with 'Type 1'. The VW Beetle is indeed known as the Type 1. And the VW Transporter is indeed the Type 2. And for completeness there was also a Type 3 and Type 4. These are quite distinct vehicles, although with a common heritage.
But the codes T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 are not shorthand for Type 1, Type 2, etc. Instead, they are shorthand for Transporter generations 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. So the first generation of the Transport is known (retrospectively) as the VW Type 2 T1. Which means there is no conflict with the Type 1 Beetle and the T1 Transporter. T2 has always been the designation of the Transporter in first and second generation forms. So why have I confused the 'colloquial' naming of the first generation Transporter as a T2 when Volkswagen themselves have distinctly coded the T1 a VW Beetle and T2? Yours and others coding as a [T1] a Transporter T2 first generation is just that, a coliquial naming process that has informally bleed into the VW lovers vocabulary. If you can prove from the records at Volkswagen Germany themselves that I am wrong and I will stand corrected.
