(Disclaimer: This page contains notes for an article that Peter Chastain would like to write about thingsteads. This article does not yet meet Wikipedia standards, and much of the information here is probably incorrect.)
A thingstead(Old English þing, assembly + stead, place (???)) in a medieval Scandanavian town was the meeting place for things (medieval assemblies).
A map of medieval Ipswich, published in 1610, shows a thingstead, a small triangular green. (Note, however that the map itself does not label it a thingstead; that identification is made by Judith Patterson and Stephen Alsford, the people who put that map on their website.)
TBD, some details, where located (just outside the North Gate - why was the thingstead outside the city wall???); history, etc.
