Tentatively restarting watching the watchlist, which looks a little calmer these days! Will need to clear up the ToDo page too! Note that can now hover over diffs in the Watchlist to see the changes. Quick link:
User:EdJogg/EditHelp
In progress:
Steam shovel -- edited recently due to new info about Ruston Proctor no. 306
references need to be properly cited, and several need to be WebCited -- particularly the VET own page, which dates from 2013 and is prone to being lost
still need to read through the whole article to look at changes since 2007-8 edits --lots more archive photos on Commons -- useful to examine these against text (_not_ include lots more!)
update preservation section to include gallery of preserved examples with extended captions (Commons has several good photos that will encourage cross-linking)
Urgent work required
WikiProjectThomas: The Other Railway has been mangelised over the years and needs restoring (compare EdJogg version 25 April 2011). Complicating this is that some of the main book character articles (such as the Skarloey engines) have been blanked and links now default to TV articles. Will take some fixing. Needs plan of action to avoid spending all waking hours doing this!
Pages examined
...back to last Ed Jogg edit (and corrections applied):
NOTE: Still includes reference to
Rheneas, meaning the BOOK engine, but pointing to the TV character. Page
Rheneas has been changed to a Redirect (as the original page was unsupported by refs: I suspect many others have gone the same way). This could take some time to fix.
2014-11-07 --
Ted Robbins -- ref to narrating the Thomas audiobooks was removed in 2012 as it had a ciitation needed flag. Look for changes by Daytona2 and restore if you can find a ref!
OLD ToDo Page Information
Please proofread the daily tip...
It's displayed below one day early.
Some tips are obsolete. So we need new tips too. Please share your best tips and tip ideas at the
Tip of the day department.
If an article has a number of tasks to be handled that are community
consensus, you may insert todo (including the four
curly braces) at the top of the article's talk page, and edit it to make the tasks more visible to the public.

Unchecked changes (blocks) Information
Some articles have so many changes during an 'off-watch period' that they are placed back on-watch without the past changes being reviewed; only new changes are checked. To avoid forgetting these changes they are listed below. Clearing these should be regarded as something of a priority.
GOOGLE WP SEARCH (from
Wikipedia:Tip of the day/July 23, 2007) -- faster (but narrower) than WP search, but need to add as a link or a bookmark or something... Note that you can do boolean and wildcard searches in the WP search box, but it is case-insensitive.
SEARCH BOOKMARKLET (from
Wikipedia:Tip of the day/April 9, 2008 -- ~axel/bookmarklet.html searches WP for currently highlighted text, or presents a popup box.
Also checkout smiley where, for example, produces

Nov 2011
Nov 23-28
BACKLOG -- not checked
Nov 22
Boiler -- re-visit
this spam addition if Andy doesn't get there first. (Contributor does have a point about feedwater treatment.)
Nov 18
Brake van --
this diff needs checking for fancy quotes and incorrect dashes, etc
Seddon Atkinson -- Major updates to Atkinson by named editor. Some copy-editing done, but a number of links were added but untested and some sections not tackled. Further work required.
Aug 2011
Aug 19
Arlesdale Railway -- query regarding history of Jock -- see
talk page and
changes. Need to double-check entry in Island of Sodor and add references.
Tower Subway --
this edit is a bit misleading, since you expect to find a circular entrance behind the theatre (which is not visible in Google Streetview). Checking out
a page on Sub-Brit (which has brilliant coverage of the subject) shows that the entrance-way that was demolished (by a warehouse falling on it!) was actually a tin shack, and the replacement 'kiosk' is probably no more than a protective cover for the shaft, which is still visible in one of the pictures.
Arlesdale Railway --
This edit needs checking against available sources. Referring to 'Real Lives', he is (or rather, River Irt is) smaller and older than the other two. Need to see if Awdry mentions this anywhere.
Jul 06-16
[BACKLOG] -- cleared
Kennet and Avon Canal -- many edits to check during FAC push (only given cursory look so far)
ROYAL MAIL THOMAS STAMPS -- Add details to
Wilbert Awdry,
Thomas the Tank Engine,
The Railway Series, and Thomas Merchandise, maybe (as RWS merchandise)? Don't leave it long before archiving and adding these! (Also see
this edit to TtTE, introducing the stamps, which was removed)
May need to note that these were written post-WP coverage. (Particularly Daisy's livery described as BR in the 1960's -- was that EdJogg's addition??????
Michael Rosen -- children's details changed yet again! Needs checking/revising.
James May's Toy Stories --
This edit adds the manufacturer of the 'Airfix' kit as a ref. (
http://www.gateguardsuk.com). Need to archive this ref (and add links to Flickr gallery, maybe?). Also note that the other two refs (about the kit being on display) are now dead. -- could try the Internet Archive first.
Day Out With Thomas is now definitely the correct name from HIT (used on their website) but it is currently a redirect to
Day out with Thomas. Need to get admin help to change this.
Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway -- has been added to the narrow gauge railway cat (
here) -- should ask whether really needs this as well as 'funicular' -- it's not really what is usually considered a "narrow gauge railway"
Michael Rosen -- see
this talk page edit which indicates that the correct information is available in the reference...needs sorting soon.
May 27
Watercress Line --
this edit removed a change to the location information of several of the structures. The ones replaced were all marked 'citation needed', but the replacement text was (apparently) sourced from someone on the working party. Inclined to believe the latter, but the edit requires further work. Need to check where the original information came from and decide what to do.
List of preserved BR Standard Class 9F locomotives -- need to update 92214's details (and archive the pages from the old website before they disappear) similarly add details for 92219 from the same place. Just added as ext links for now.
Apr 2011
Apr 20
James May's Toy Stories -- extra refs for the second race between Barnstaple and Bideford:
[1],
[2],
[3]. Others may be available. Also need to archive the existing (Top Gear) ref.
Apr 19
Thomas & Friends -- (experienced anti-vandal Administrator) User:JamesBWatson removed the (unreferenced) section on Voice Actors with the comment "Removing subsection which is unsourced, and has undergone innumerable changes of a kind which make it clear that the list is completely unreliable." EdJogg replied (with thanks) on his talk page, noting "I suspect that now I should visit all the character/episode pages, and the corresponding actor pages, to remove all the unreferenced material -- could be 40-50 pages :o(. Trouble is, this kind of stuff has a habit of re-appearing." So, you'll have to consider doing just that!
Mar 2011
Mar 08
SY Gondola -- just discovered (but around for a while). Have heavily edited the 'Sailing' (advert) section, and rewritten the lede, but the rest -- particularly relating to the steam engines -- could do with some attention too. [Good lunchtime's work to fix.]
Mar 04
Aveling and Porter -- added an ODNB ref for Thomas Aveling, and modified two links elsewhere to
Thomas Aveling (engineer) because
Thomas Aveling is (currently) a redirect to someone else. Need to use the ODNB ref to build an article for TA himself, with a hatnote to the other bloke.
Also note that there is a brilliant history section at the front of "Age of the Traction Engine" by Robert A Whitehead that needs applying here. Current TE history is woefully inadequate.
Mar 01
Two changes found during offwatchlist backup recovery:
LNER Class A4 -- 'In fiction' section has been marked as unreferenced (since Nov 2010). Need to add refs for RWS, since we can.
Feb 2011
Feb 17
Following ToTD regarding <categorytree>, have now added a Category Tree for 'Steam Power' to the Steam Portal. The following sub-section now needs revising to reflect the growing category structure, and only show likley missing categories. (Most of section may be deleted.)
Do you know anything about Foden's pistol boiler, or the Garratt curved-crown stayless firebox? Garratt seem to have used this on the smaller portables and not some of the large road engines, but where was the split?
”
Have a look for Foden/Garratt info in the approp books...
Feb 02
<COMMONS> -- Several Robey pics not yet in cats (including the tandem roller added to
steam roller)
Note that
Robey & Co does not yet exist, but there are already three cats (Created by AD) at Commons...
steam wagon -- need to add mention that Robey tandem rollers used their steam wagon engine/boiler (see ref to tandem roller at Robey Trust); also that Clayton and Sentinel wagon engines were used as the basis for steam railcars by these companies (see intro to BR survey book on DMUs) -- add to the company pages too
User:EdJogg/Steam Portal -- category list is well out-of-date. Many of the redlinks have been renamed, and others have been created.
Somerset Space Walk --
This change removed the (dead) refs to Parrett People (among others) -- need to do some tidying up here
User:EdJogg/sandbox2 still contains development info for Somerset Space Walk. Need to process this and clear it out. Also still need to add Mum's 'Sun' photos and details therefrom
Tower Bridge --
this edit removed the query about the number of accumulators and the link to the hydraulics section. Need to expand info (as documented lower down ToDo page?)
Jan 25
Voiture État à 2 étages -- just found (French Autotrain) -- check it's linked where needed...
COMMONS - 'Category:Burrell vehicles' contains several (from Geograph and other) that are not in the Traction engine (etc) cats, including
File:Burrell universal ploughing engine.jpg (line drawing - VERTICAL drum) and
File:Burrell 4000, Ex-Mayor.jpg. Only solution is to work through each manuf cat and each pic in turn checking for appropriate cats...
Talk:Isambard Kingdom Brunel#Engineer -- a comment has been made that IKB was not only a Civil Engineer, as noted in the lede, but also a Nautical and Mechanical Engineer, and hence the lede needed updating.
[update] - another editor has revised the text (as reflected in a new message by EdJogg at the above talk page) and there is now the need to add information about the control system of the
Waterloo & City Railway cars to
Multiple-unit train control, and about steam/diesel railcars/MUs to the History section of Multiple unit. (Also see Railcar and Railmotor.) No urgency...
Jan 19
Tower Bridge -- found further refs for the bus bridge jump ('Time' magazine archive) -- see talk page
T&F 'season' articles have all been renamed, and are now of the form
Thomas and Friends (series 14). WP:THOMAS/FAQ has been updated to suit, as has the main T&F page and the Thomas template. Now need to rationalise TWO redirects for all these pages, although the vast number of links are from the template.
First change should be to work through each Series page, updating the infobox links (have done 13 and 14, plus Emily page).
Nov 06
SECR N1 class -- achieved GA status (without EdJogg's help!) -- worth a read through in case anything was missed (by the experienced editors involved!)...
Images of Skarloey Railway locos (Peter Sam, Duncan, Sir Handel) are available on Commons, together with lots of pics of Thomas locos -- check that all the Commons cats boxes are in place - may need to subdivide the Commons cats! (prompted by addition of pic of Rev W Awdry!)
John Inshaw -- only just discovered by EdJogg, but an early experimenter of steam-powered road and water craft (in Birmingham), also inventing a steam clock. Several ext links discovered, with more info to add when you have time.
James Watt -- many edits by known author --requested peer review
Update - Sept 30 - Review has been closed without much work being undertaken
Sept 08
Mortehoe and Woolacombe railway station -- proposed development has changed. New plans for 25 detached houses - including converting the station buildings into four dwellings! Plans are available as PDF downloads (although whether these can be 'archived' is not known).
Aug 2010
Aug 31
BR Standard Class 5 73096 -- article needs updating to reflect actual history of loco -- note that this could be moved from the "Incidents on the MHR" page.
Aug 26
Isambard Kingdom Brunel -- text added recently about 2006 work - needs further update for accuracy (see talk page)
Automobile -- this talk page comment suggests a modification to the 'History' section of the article to put a better spin on steam cars. Worth following up if no-one else does.
Aug 24
Salvage Squad -- Series 2 -- have found (and added) link to the tiny dustcart. Would benefit from additional details added.
Amberley Museum Railway -- newly added pictures in table have poor format. Gallery includes duplicate photo. etc
Aug 22
Marc Isambard Brunel -- new editor has added [
link to an HD video]. At work, video could not be loaded in IE 6 nor Firefox, and Chrome only showed static frame. Does it need a special plugin? (Note that this has been pointed-out on the user's talk page by another editor.)
Revise first para as text is aimed at 'carpet railway'
add Commons photo to model steam loco cat -- also note there are separate cats for 'model steam engines' and 'models of steam engines', as there are for 'model steam locomotives' and 'models of steam locomotives', although the latter provides a useful banner that needs propagating to the other problem cats
See
Talk:GWR 5600 Class#Weight? for a discussion about a discrepancy in referenced information. Awaiting Redrose64 to apply reference and tidy up, but if he doesn't, EdJogg should be able to do it.
Aug 09
Check links for these page links added to 'Thomas and Friends' and the Thomas template:
Incidents at the Watercress Line -- this was split from main page and needs to be merged back. Add merge banners and start the process. You may need to highlight beyond the pages themselves.
BP has commented on EJ talk page about same subject
LB&SCR A1 class -- Bluebellnutter has done many changes and is seeking a peer review to raise the article from 'B' class -- read through
these changes as there are a few bits that need attention. (NB - majority of changes were done in June)
British Railways Mark 1 -- there are loads of good pictures at Commons. Several unlicensed were deleted from article recently, needs repopulating
Apr 23
Work laptop, working through the T&F Season articles (just 12-13 left) tidying up lede text, dashes, removing apostrophes, dodgy links, etc. Added files to the T&F Unwatched Pages, since the edit count on these is quite low now.
Note that should be using Template:Start date in the infobox -- added it recently to one. Need to re-visit the first few since the episode summaries were not examined ...
Also note that there have been some edits since first tidying done, which may or may not need revising.
Apr 18
Thomas the Tank Engine -- major edit by MDCollins (initially on Apr 12). Needs reviewing.
Amberley Museum Railway -- typos in table -- change 'in occasional use' to 'operational (watch the variable spelling)
Apr 15
The Fat Controller --
this change replaced several uncited (but ref-implied) facts with equally plausible but equally uncited fact. Need to check the refs.
Devon Belle -- link to video clip added -- suggest adding as 'external media' -- can't view at STE
Mar 22
Pumping station --
this edit shows the need for a 'general design' section, since it applies across multiple types
Mar 15
The Railway Series (URGENT) --
this change modified a section which has a Sibley reference. Meaning is subtly changed. Check and correct as required.
Thames Tunnel -- two different photo sets at Flickr -- one listed on talk page -- make sure both sets are linked, and perhaps copy a few for use within the article.
Mar 10
horsepower -- section on Indicated horsepower is unreferenced and could benefit from expansion from available texts
Watercress Line --
apparently Lord Nelson failed during the steam gala -- quick search today revealed no news, so if it wasn't major, need to revert this change (non-notable incident)
WATCH OUT --
174.3.123.220 (
talk·contribs) has the same modus operandi -- 13:05, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
[UPDATE] -- can use the template to insert pipes to anchored links!! Restore using this... 13:02, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
Feb 21
Top Gear Race to the North was nominated for GA on 15 Feb, and editors given 7 days to address the issues raised. Unfortunately, no-one did anything and the nomination failed.
User talk:SilkTork (the reviewer) has suggested mutual encouragement with EdJogg to work on improving the article to GA status (also see article talk page). Try and look at it before you get too far into March!
Feb 16
Talk:Steam engine has been archived -- about time too! Might be worth a look to see if there are any old topics that need resurrecting...
Beam engine -- Clem Rutter has taken exception to the lede and commented it out! (Quite right too, really, as at least half of it needed re-writing.) Long comment added to his talk page, but a new lede will be needed, possibly after expanding the article somewhat -- it should be covering all the different known types, in order, as summary sections with links to the main articles, and it isn't doing that...
Clem has indicated that he is no more qualified to write this than I
Clem has added a series of relevant links on his talk page -- not sure what he is expecting to happen next!
Feb 03
Engine -- paragraph about search engines, etc, has been removed (by Wolfkeeper). Query left on talk page which may need following up. These are covered at
Engine (disambiguation), but the first line of that page doesn't really cover them. Might be that the hatnote needs tweaking, that would do.
There's a proposal to delete all unreferenced BLP articles. A debate is going on. Wait for pages to be tagged and then act fast (most of EdJogg's pages are not BLPs!, but see list further down page). However, following an alert at WP:THOMAS, the following project pages have been identified as BLPs lacking references -- these need tackling as a matter of some urgency:
Great Western Railway -- alert from Geof Sheppard regarding imminent GA push. Need to re-read from scratch now.
LB&SCR E2 class --
this edit (06 Jan) needs checking against available refs -- and someone has just added a fact tag with the same idea!
Jan 17
this edit removed a redlink for 'backpumps'. This is a phrase which needs defining.
Lock (water transport)#Pumping is an appropriate place, although the current text only deals with pumping to a summit. It needs the existing text to use Crofton as an example, and then mention that many restoration schemes involve the retro-fitting of back pumping to reduce the water usage. Do a wiki search of "back pump" and you'll find about ten articles requiring wikilinks. Then alert on WP:UKW.
Jan 15
Steam donkey -- dispute over a category inclusion with user:Norcalal. Have left a message on his talk page. He has responded, quite abruptly, and it would be worth raising the question elsewhere. Need to do some tidying up as he has responded at his talk page, EdJogg's talk page (where there is no copy of the question yet) and on the steam donkey talk page...
British Rail Class 45 -- edit includes new inline refs that are not identified as such. Small tidy-up required. Article also includes a table that needs much formatting to look presentable on
Watchlist article count peaked at 1997 pages! (since reduced somewhat)
Watercress Line -- major additions (stock tables): column widths need sorting, and there's a non-existent reference used. Further changes on 08 Jan. Since moved to
Rolling stock of the Watercress Line, where the same work is still required -- and more!!
(Commons) -- on Category:Kew add a 'see also' to Category:Kew Bridge Steam Museum (which is across the river from Kew!) Note that the 'ww2 shelter' includes Kew as a cat, which needs removing.
Dec 2009
Dec 25
British Rail Class 42 -- major table revision (sorely needed) -- but needs checking and further formatting -- not a huge job
Dec 22
Papplewick Pumping Station -- needs pictures from Geograph uploaded to Commons and added to article. (EdJogg has already added an ext link pointing to Geograph!)
Update (06 Feb) - new link added with some useful photos, including an info panel describing the boilers (number, pressures, usage, etc). Website also describes the steam engines. An interesting couple of hours editing!
Dec 19
File:Poyle Pump 022.JPG -- Andy Dingley has pointed out that this pre-dates traction engines by several decades (hence removed from article) -- now need to research this further, and update the Commons description (and Geograph page?
See
[5] where there is the additional information:
"The Trust was responsible for the maintenance of 17 miles of the Bath Road between Cranford bridge and Maidenhead bridge. They erected several pumps along the turnpike, specifically in order to fill water tanks to lay dust. Only two such pumps remain now, one here at Poyle, and one at Longford." Presumably the tanks were in horse-drawn carts, which would explain the need for the great height.
Now need to update the several Commons pages again! (and Geograph still)
Great Dorset Steam Fair -- Michael Oliver's death has been noted, but best to put (birth-death) dates in, maybe? Worth a section on him alone?
Dec 07
Percy the Small Engine -
this edit suggests Awdry and Reginald Dalby 'made amends' over Percy's drawings -- need to check and cite
Dec 06
BACKLOG -- now inaccessible using Watchlist (05 Jan 2010)
Dec 05
BACKLOG -- now inaccessible using Watchlist (04 Jan 2010)
Dec 04
BP has reported that WC/BB and MN articles are now 'complete' (again). They have been through major revisions (despite being FA) and need a (proof-) read-through.
Talk:Traction engine -- includes brief conversation and link about traction engine and roundabout ploughing tackle at the Sci Mus reserve collection (Wroughton). Poss use as ref in a steam ploughing article, not for
traction engine. (No further work required immediately.)
Mid Sodor Railway --
this edit needs checking and citing -- see also other links on this page. NB a Google for "Awdry V1" didn't reveal anything useful.
GWR 7200 Class -- has had a picture added, possibly in response to EdJogg's email. Send a follow-up email of thanks.
Nov 06
Note new edit at
Talk:British Rail regarding privatisation and the ext link (see below)
Nov 03
Steam donkey --
this edit has removed several Ext links from the same library site. Consider at least adding to Talk Page, and possibly revising article link to give more direct links more subtly.
steam engine -- (and other articles) -- has acquired a link to a full Google digitisation of "
A descriptive history of the steam engine" (1824) by Robert Stuart (with pictures). This remarkable book covers all the early history in some detail. Very useful!
Oct 10
My Thomas Story Library -- are these listed at OCLC? (is that acronym correct?) If so can add proper references, ISBNs and book order!
External combustion engine --
this diff, which modifies certain claims (and doesn't really reflect the edit summary) needs checking and correcting as appropriate. (AGF)
'Watcher' tool -- showing how many users (>30) are watching a page -- apparently there is a perceived 'security issue' about seeing stats below 30!
Article Counter -- lists number of article space edits (EdJogg at 10600 in 2700 separate articles!) plus all articles/redirects/etc created by a user (EdJogg: 16 articles, incl. 4 DABs, plus 128 redirects!!) NB - may not work with search parms in URL
Oct 08
URGENT -- Some 'tidying' has been done, resulting in a few issues (eg, lost links to 'Unfeatured' characters (they were redlinks!) and changing of catsort parms)
Valve gear --
this edit has applied a caveat to some existing text - need to check accuracy against available sources -- may be necessary to add 'most' with a footnote explaining the exceptions
Richard Garrett & Sons --
this edit has added a long paragraph that needs some fettling -- no more than 15mins work if not side-tracked!
Talk:Steam car -- rant left by EdJogg about the state of the start of the article. Really need to address this as there are no descriptions of the actual "how it works" kind.
User:DavidCane has been a very busy bunny and has a series of '?' icons to indicate DYKs, alongside the FAs and GAs...(also see the userbox collection for 'highlighting' contributions to WP)
Corliss steam engine -- Ext links templated as 'link farm'. Have asked question on talk page, regarding creation of list to house these. Now awaiting answers.
The Fat Controller -- Under 'other uses', an editor has removed reference to British press using the name to refer to incompetent controllers of British Railways, etc (was fact-tagged since Oct 2008). Need to investigate whether term was actually in use, or not and restore as appropriate.
Sept 25
An anon editor (
67.251.39.56 (
talk·contribs)) has changed the ordering of character sections in
Arlesdale Railway,
Skarloey Railway and
Minor characters in The Railway Series (lots). Query has been left on their talk page regarding the ordering used. Looks like it might be by 'first appearance'. Need to decide if this order is best, or whether alphabetical is better, then adjust accordingly. Note that editor has had criticism from elsewhere about edit activity, but has not responded anywhere.
Sept 24
Need to add
OCLC reference number for all book cites, as you go. Lots of Awdry books there. Might be the answer to referencing all those Thomas Story Library books? Also, presumably can add information to the list of Railway Series books (eg using OCLC). Start by changing the template 'Thomas' references on the links pages. Refs on other pages can be updated as you encounter them.
Sept 21
User:EdJogg/Workshop holds a version of
Fictional locations in The Railway Series and was being used to add a series of succession boxes, off-line. It now transpires that this huge amount of work wouldn't have been acceptable anyway. The related templates have been/will be deleted soon. Need to check each location in each article for additions/corrections, apply them to the main-space article and clear the sandbox.
Day out with Thomas includes new ref describing "Jimmy the Jinty", the ELR's answer to HiT being bolshy about 'Thomas' events. Ref needs formatting, and may be able to integrate better into the text. Useful ref: consider inclusion on other pages.
Sept 06
Slough Town F.C. -- look on website to discover news stories concerning the new stadium WHICH IS GOING AHEAD! Need a new section for this...
Sept 03
Showman's road locomotive - addition needs editing. Also need to mention use of engines for demolition duties during WW2, their powerful winches being ideal for toppling the remains of bomb-damaged buildings. Some were requisitioned, others taken on hire, and many did not return to show use. (There's a book all about it...!)
Sept 02
James the Red Engine -- text has been entered about the book and its stories (see
diff. At very least it needs formatting! (assuming that it's going to be kept)
Aug 2009
Aug 31
Giesl ejector -- refs need formatting, and may also provide more detail than is there at present (eg worked well with fuel saving, but not a success due to licensing cost!. Also mention to BP: article, refs (which are a good read!), list omits one loco with Giesl, main WC/BB article skips over the experiment, etc... (BP has since looked at this note and applied some changes (14 Sept 09)!!)
Mirrlees -- converted from redirect to DAB. Check
this diff for an addition to avoid a page being listed at 'short pages' (which may be approp for some of the RWS location 'redirects'). Also note that the Mann B&W Diesel should make reference to the earlier company names -- I DON'T suggest you change the links, unless you make some other comment too...
Aug 28
Ferdinand Verbiest - check
this diff (at home) -- it MAY not be a typo (see what the website says (cannot check at work)
Greenwood & Batley -- see links further down -- needs further copy-editing now that merge is complete. No need to compare pre-merge versions, this has been done.
Suggestion at
Wikipedia talk:WikiProject London Transport#WikiProject Popular pages describes request to create a page for the most-looked-at pages within a WikiProject, allowing members to see which pages are most visited, and hence which should have the most editing attention.
Fireless locomotive -- talk page includes an interesting new type, the
Natronlokomotive (Google translation of de:wiki) which harnessed the heat released on adding water to NaOH to create steam! (Yikes!) Needs input from a German-speaker, but might be worth raising at WP:Railways -- instant DYK!!
Jul 17
Bagnall 0-4-0ST "Alfred" and "Judy" -- Quick proof-read for Geof. (already checked for obvious typos) (don't worry about the big diff) (Update ToDo!)
Tower Bridge main section now split into 'History' and 'Design' -- has been rationalised by EdJogg, but you really need to get on with the addition of notes from the new reference.
found a FANTASTIC reference source:
http://www.todayinsci.com/Events/Bridges/BridgeTower.htm which is detailed enough for us to get to GA with (certainly to 'B') - not much info on the steam engines, but MASSES on the construction
Curious ref to a glass vase
here: " Interestingly there is a Straw Opal vase set in the foundations of Tower Bridge." Pops-up all over the web, by people copying this text!
This page has slightly different text: " Interestingly there is a Straw Opal vase set in the foundations of Tower Bridge as part of a time capsule". Further refs (eg see lead from H2G2) suggest that there was a time capsule placed under/behind the foundation stone... Further research required!
It's not a Reliable Source, but
the H2G2 psge contains lots of interesting information, and a few leads, including
this one, which may be referenced already, and looks very much like the one first mentioned here. (Interestingly, this also says that there are 2 accumulators, although the H2G2 site says 6 -- did it copy this from wp?
This site looks unofficial -- you've seen it before -- did it get information from WP article? Would be interesting to see changes via Wayback machine! Don't use it as a ref, it's awful! (I think
this is the official site! -- yet it, too mentions six accumulators. Need to email them!
THIS ENTRY WAS FOUND IN GOOGLE MAIL!! (no idea whether it has been implemented or not.)
Thomas and Friends -- finish checking
this diff, which is a major re-org. Completed checking new text (a few refs remain iffy + some hi-def quotes have been used) -- next need to check that no impt info was lost.
Fix
Commonscat model villages fiasco!! (see
this diff and the corresponding Commons cats) Bournville and Port Sunlight have been classified as scale models! (also copied to new ToDo section)

VERY URGENT -- AT TRAINSPOTTINGWORLD: All Railway Series book covers need a 'fair use rationale' added. Recommend creating a basic template that can be added to all images, that includes a comment noting that further information will be applied in due course.
All BR Standard Class article names standardised, now need to watch for links needing updating for the following (as many links used the un-capitalized forms):
"Image:GER J70.jpg" (a 1953 picture of a tram engine) has been deleted from Commons because of its unknown copyright status. Hence the following articles no longer have a picture of the prototype:
Wisbech and Upwell Tramway,
Toby the Tram Engine,
Tram engine. Need to source a replacement photo (Jim B?).
Aeolipile -- it has come to light that Hero's description was preceded by nearly a century! Hence need to update certain articles to reflect this. The following articles link to aeolipile and may require attention once a suitable reference is found to confirm the assertion (listed in order of occurrence in 'what links here' for Aeolipile)(Articles in brackets may not require further work.):
According to the writings of the Roman Aulus Gellius, in c. 400 BC, a Greek Pythagorean named Archytas, propelled a wooden bird along wires using steam. However, it would not appear to have been powerful enough to take off under its own thrust.
Somehow must note that the name came from Mannheim Roller, and was only called steamroller after the group was formed... This is going to take some serious research! (and a modification of the
Mannheim School article, where these musical techniques are discussed. Have asked for help there. Let's see if anything comes up! -- also raised alert at
Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Classical music/Archive 19).
(Update May 29) Have had some responses at both articles -- useful one at the project page -- the school article has been updated to remove refs to roller altogether! (Note
Dolmetsch musical dictionary includes entries on Mannheim Roller and Rocket.)
Note that the project talk page comment has been archived and should be copied across to the article talk page to remain relevant.
This was prompted by a change to
Talk:Outline of vehicles, where the banner was changed to that for the newer Wikiproject.
Note that
Index of steam energy articles used to be called
List of steam energy topics, but was renamed by user 'The Transhumanist' (lead editor of the project) at the end of April 09, probably so that the article did not appear on their radar. However, "List...topics" is the preferred naming convention for A-Z lists of articles (which is what it is). BUT it is actually an Index page (and is part of the Wikiproject Index (?), also led by Transhumanist). Hence the first stage is to contact the Transhumanist about this and broach the subject of a possible 'steam outline'. (This is not urgent!)
Need to find out if the outlines are supposed to include ALL articles about a subject (it may be that this is the case, and if any sections become too large, a sub-outline is required).
There is a template available (
Template:Outline generator) which is designed to form the basic structure of an outline page
Tower Bridge -- Incidents section (esp bridge jump) rationalised in
this edit. Check and restore as appropriate.
May 11
Railway electrification in Great Britain --
this diff is a major tidy-up by an anon editor. Most changes look OK, but one or two rationalisations have changed the meaning of the text. 15-30 min job?
Watercress Line -- steam locomotive table has been added, but really needs formatting to add some more columns.
March 2009
Mar 27
Kew Bridge Steam Museum -- has obviously had a change-around with regard to its narrow-gauge activity (see
this update). However, some history/ext links have been lost in the edit (eg 'Cloister' no longer there?) Leave for a bit, as the anon editor may be watching, then sneak some of it back in!
Mar 22
Flatbed truck as had section on railways added (by
Flockton Flyer editor, from which it is also linked. Think that actually it should exist as a separate article, as 'bed' is rarely used in a railway context...
Mar 16
Hollycombe Steam Collection - miniature railway needs lots of checking (awful English) - other changes need review
William Murdoch 'steam powered locomotion' requires work, esp where museum location of model is concerned
Mar 14
Sir Handel (diff) - Major rewrite? or simply a reversion to an older version - needs careful check
Slough --
this diff shows when Satchwell info was removed -- seems unfair -- find a ref and stick it back!
Feb 11
History of the steam engine -- significant change to "Strong steam" section. -- need to post request for comment on the Steam Engine talk page
Feb 10
Watercress Line -- refs added for 'Incidents' section, but need citing properly See below). Text may benefit from further refinement too.
NB -- the RAIB report could be very useful as a ref for describing signalling procedures. It also contains a section of definitions at the end which could well be used in articles about signalling, points, operations, etc. (although there could be copyright issues?)
Feb 09
Hunslet Engine Company -- gallery removed (although most pics are in Commons) -- some historic and ALL diesel pics removed. NB article doesn't mention the BR Class 05, although we have a pic. Consider restoring some (esp diesels) to article. Also note major changes on 09 Feb still need to be proof-read.
?? Feb 2009
Contact Peterson Holdings / Caterpillar Inc for permission to copy photos of
Daniel Best and
Benjamin Holt from their website. (These photos appear on several sites -- it seems to be the original source. See
Daniel Best page for starting link.)
Follow-up outgoing links with return links - not many incoming yet
Jan 29
GWR 3031 Class -- mentions "The Queen" replica at Windsor stn, and the fate of the tender -- scope for SWRS link?
Jan 28
British Rail Class 50 -- needs links to preservation groups changed to refs, merging of two tables into one (at end) + simplification of the preserved loco details. Lots of potential for work here, as there's already a lot to go on. Potential for GA?? (28 Jan) NB - recent work tweaked by other ed (04 Feb)
Grand Western Canal map has been improved -- need to compare before and after templates and answer at the talk page.
Dec 13
Ferranti -- major update -- full re-read required (ignore history for now)
Dec 09
Following death of Oliver Postgate, following files have been checked. All have had a ref to Peter Firmin added -- this needs formatting (listed below):
Oliver Postgate,
Peter Firmin,
Smallfilms,
Ivor the Engine
Bagpuss - doubtful pic is due for deletion Pic at Ivor is OK and shows the way to go...
The new link to Peter Firmin article from the Dragons' Friendly Society has much of use for all of these articles. Need to update text below about 'work to do'.
URGENT - still not too late to contact Peter Firmin about Sam on Boffs' Island and suitable illustrations for the WP articles.
Oliver Postgate "Seeing Things - an autobiography" isbn 0 330 39000 7 pub. 2000, illustrated by Peter Firmin
p294 "...the BBC was waiting for us to complete some single-frame inserts for Sam on Boffs' Island for its Education Department." (ie SoBI immediately preceded Bagpuss)
p297 "The introduction to Sam on Boffs' Island had been a very bright piece of music. It had caught my ear, as one might say, and I made enquiries about its origin. It had been played by a couple of folk musicians,
Sandra Kerr and
John Faulkner..." and they went on to compose and perform the music and songs for Bagpuss.

Suggest adding a note to Waterways project re adding VDE links (need to find a good example to use)
October 2008

Extend ToC for rail glossary pages to include See Also, refs, etc
Use
Template:CompactTOC8 which provides the same A-Z list with support for extra links
Consider a Navibox for these pages (already mentioned 'globally' in an edit summary!) bring up at a project talk page maybe
Ilfracombe -- hotel fire pics (from Flickr) have been deleted as non-free - find yours + replace!

Woolacombe -- expand coverage of Assault Training Center and links to other pages (see
Talk:Omaha Beach)
- regarding St Sabinus, etc... (Aug 08)
Sharp Corporation - have found a partial list of products. Need to create and populate it.
May - July 2008
Jul 08 ?
History of steam road vehicles -- (Jul 08) dispute about the electric bicycle bit... Had been removed to talk page, then re-added by original contributor. Is it really appropriate for a steam vehicle page? (see talk page entry). Have removed it again... Also see coverage at:
Ivan Kulibin,
Automobile,
History of the automobile Would benefit from further research and clarification. Preliminary work has been done, however: expect back-lash!
History of the automobile has had Verbiest information removed, but Kubilin has been added/retained. Note Oliver Evans also needs attention here.
Russian refs rationalised by another editor on 6 Nov 2008!!
May-July
Marlow Branch Line - route map has lost details - seems to be a style issue with that Kevin bloke...
Add workpage to user pages as approp (also compare other templates in cat.

Query left on
User talk:Chris j wood (
see here) about Funiculars and, especially coverage of 'Cliff Lifts' -- essentially need to make sure that Cliff Lifts are described properly
Articles requiring a straight-forward proof-read of the whole article (high-level, and hence faster, than a GA- or FA-level proof read). Usually included here following major changes to the article, and insufficient time to tackle on-the-fly.

'Suggestions for article improvement' left on talk pages by EdJogg, requiring follow-up:
Add details from (25 Sep 08): Text added to macadam indicates that John Loudon McAdam based his idea on a French predecessor; his article does not yet reflect that. Second note added 27 Nov 09 to mention that
macadam had been further amended with more detail.
References to format
References added to articles by EdJogg (or others), usually in a hurry, which require converting to standard 'cite' template format: (See also:
User:EdJogg/EditHelp#Cite templates)
Online references found by EdJogg and noted on Talk pages, with the intention of future inclusion in articles: (This list is incomplete...keep looking!)
File:Elsecar Heritage Centre.jpg (recent addition at Commons + pic of Newcomen engine from Geograph) has red category for "Elsecar Heritage Centre" (added by PRJ) which needs integrating properly (11 Jan 09)
Commons cat 'Steamsounds' contains a series of B&W pics and audio clips. Clip
File:71000 passing St Andrew's Junction.ogg is already on the
BR Standard Class 8 page. Make sure that all the other pics/sounds are in use. (NB - also investigate his CDs and try to add detail to the audio clips in Commons, which is so far non-existent!)
Fix
Commonscat model villages fiasco!! (see
this diff and the corresponding Commons cats) Bournville and Port Sunlight have been classified as scale models! (also see Notices for 09 Feb 09 from where this note was copied)
Edit traction engine captions to cross-Wikilink back to WP articles for manufacturer, etc
Register on WP-Commons: and start uploading/using images
Commons cat 'London Transport' redirects to 'Transport in London', which is clearly wrong. Go to
WikiProject London Transport and canvass opinion. (?? Apr 07)
Dead Links
Find/fix/archive-link the dead links identified on the following pages:
OR find the pages of dead External Links WP:DEADLINK and search for something on your watchlist to fix! (you've got nearly 100k pages to chose from!)
Also see
Wikipedia:WikiProject Red Link Recovery/Initialisation for suggested replacements for redlinks -- several (10-15) railway-related in list at present (Jun 09). This matches article names against redlinks by looking for slightly differing middle initials.
Many thousands of pages are unreferenced, but some are specifically labelled as such. These are pages from EdJogg's watchlist noticed to have an "Unreferenced" banner present:
There is a proposal to delete all unreferenced BLP articles (BLP = Biography of Living Person). A debate is going on. Wait for pages to be tagged and then act fast (most of EdJogg's pages are not BLPs!). However, following an alert at WP:THOMAS, the following project pages have been identified as BLPs lacking references -- these need tackling as a matter of some urgency (update progress at:
Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Thomas#Request for comment on Biographies of living people):
It is not usually necessary, and officially discouraged, to edit a page merely to change a valid redirect to the destination page or another redirect. However, there are some cases where the redirect used is not ideal, and EdJogg considers that their continued usage is likely to encourage incorrect usage elsewhere. Hence, the following redirects should be changed when spotted while editing other articles.
There are LOADS of redirects to the Rev. W. Awdry's page, especially since it has been moved at least twice. Most have already been cleared of article links, but three remain with tens of links:
Around 11 Feb 09,
James Watt was moved to
James Watt (inventor) and 'all' inward links were updated (
James Watt being converted to a DAB page). Fairly soon after, the move was reverted as inappropriate, but many of the new links were not restored. To avoid more bad links being created in future, need to resolve this page-move shenanigans.
When editing the following pages, change
James Watt (inventor) back to
James Watt. Note that (usually) this should not be done in isolation, only as part of some other edit. Delete link from list when updated. (Compare progress against
'What links here')
On constant monitor and frequently reverted...some tasks outstanding:
New photos at Commons of the steam engines, including one of the accumulator. (24 Feb 2010)
paragraph about the Shard Tower (added 28th Jan 09) requires work.
- Partly formatted/ref'd by EdJogg (31 Jan 2009), but deeper research and refinement is required.
- Note new name for tower should be applied
- also note that the tower (Shard Tower ?) article doesn't include anything about English Heritage's opposition
LTM Bus jump reference is dead (16 Nov 2008)
- need to find it from the Internet Archive as someone has replaced the text with the paragraph from H2G2 (actually a complete copyvio, word-for-word!)
- Details from previous version have been lost (eg date, time, bus type).
TfL traffic calming, etc (added by EdJogg!), appears to be reference-less... (but see talk page!!)
New ref on Talk Page from Engineering Timelines -- good detail to add
Look-up new link to
Tower Bridge - looks interesting (May Bank Hol 2008)
Talk page refs to integrate (see elsewhere on ToDo list!)
Ferdinand Verbiest
PC window-launching issues - going to try restart...
Google for: "Astronomia Europea" verbiest steam produces three results:
The
Barry Ten were the last ten locomotives left at Dai Woodhams' in Barry.
At the very least need a redirect to a full list
the list should be on
Woodham Brothers initially (there's an obvious place towards the end)
Barry Island Railway includes a partial loco list, as these are where they are currently -- UPDATE -- much movement in 2010: some going to GWS for components, others elsewhere
Search WP for 'barry eight' and 'barry ten' and you'll find more refs to link
http://vogr.org/ is a useful set of pages which look like an old Barry Island Railway page - contains much of interest, and should be 'rescued' before it vanishes! (each loco has own page) -- too late -- no longer accessible (Dec 2010) and blocked at Internet Archive
On
GWR 1000 Class there are references to two engines from the Barry Ten, components from which are now being used in the County/Grange projects...
ON-GOING: 'Thomas' (TV) character pages were given a major makeover by User:Starkiller. Good edits, but need to re-check Railway Series -related information, links from related RS character pages, and incoming links (anchors). This can be done piecemeal as each character is checked. (end-May 2009)
(03 Jun 09)
Fictional locations in Thomas and Friends has had a major update recently by Starkiller (ignore all previous edits!) Now shows that TV series locations are pretty-much unrelated to their book relations, apart from sharing some names. This should allow:
Splitting of 'common' articles into either TV or book sections
Replacement of remaining pages by either redirects (to TV or book page?) or DAB pages (overkill?)
Make sure all common-named places are cross-linked in both directions
Hero of the Rails -- new feature-length 'Thomas' film due out in September? Recently-created article, copy-edited by EdJogg but currently unreferenced. Likely to attract a lot of noise... (27 May 09)
David Mitton obituaries contain some information useful for referencing T&F/TUGS pages (26 May 09)
Major characters in The Railway Series - claim that Daisy was made from 2 x Tri-ang dmus - NB ref is on Clutterbuck pages (taken from an Annual, so it is true!) (14 Feb 09)
Write a FAQ to cover (non-)inclusion of language-specific details (already done, Feb 2009?)
Remove the Japanese text from the remaining articles -- (copy it to TSW/the other wiki!) Annie & Clarabel also done now. (NB some already removed before 'rescue' - eg James/Edward? - Check Contributions around 26 - 30 Jan)
James the Red Engine -- 'James as a model' has been rewritten (and proof-read by EdJogg) but it still makes little sense! (12 Nov 08)
Thomas Live show --
James the Red Engine includes a mention that his model is a record holder. Googling "largest model railway engine" also revealed
this link and
this link, both of which contain short video clips. Can see models of Thomas, Percy and James, plus Annie and Clarabel and some trucks, all moving; Harold and Jack; plus a face (Gordon?) in the shed. Worth adding these as refs to relevant pages. NB - second link notes that the Thomas model visited the Queen's birthday party... (Nov 2008)
The Railway Series - list of books - needs some formatting to avoid line-breaks on small screens - some character links need updating too (08?? Sept 08)
copy has been saved to Sandbox1, for copying entries to Skarloey Railway, Other Railway, etc.
Need to sort out the remaining inward links
NB - all the redirects have been moved - would be worth working out where they went!
19th May:
The Railway Stories - hunt for the other Ted Robbins CDs...also note addition of tape for books 39-41 check the ISBN!
Minor characters in The Railway Series -- Gwernol has been heavy-handed and removed ALL the information for Wilbert (on the basis that he is not a 'real' locomotive). Need to double-check all the facts (with refs) and restore, possibly in a different section. Should also consider re-adding Talyllyn and Dolgoch (with suitable refs), also removed. (05 Apr 2008)
Minor characters in The Railway Series -- since modified to change coach information, especially change of focus from Mid Sodor to Penrhyn Quarry as original source. (19 Feb 08)
Arlesdale Railway -- essentially need to revert what was changed on 10th Feb. Better to provide proper refs though (10 Feb 08)
Skarloey Railway -- Check coaching stock info + provide refs (same person modified as for CFR and AR (below)) -- 04 - 08 Feb 2008
Many of the Railway Series characters have had 'former numbers' assigned, most of which are probably fictitious. Also check latest
Skarloey Railway change vs refs. User
76.118.22.194 (
talk·contribs) has added several recently (25 Jan 08), which are not mentioned on Martin Clutterbuck's pages. Need to check and update all characters against references! Also note that this user has added spurious or unhelpful information (eg Emily is Thomas' girlfriend) to many railway pages, although not all edits are bad. (25 Jan 08)
Needing proof reading (large changes, Dec 07 - Jan 08)...
Wilbert Awdry -- query from SCRuffeyfan (on talk page) about how he died... (23 Dec 07)
query has been addressed on talk page, but not in article
See ref just added to page (obituary written by Brian Sibley) also includes references to other engine characters, events, etc -- will be of great use as an additional reference source all over the place! (08 Oct 08)
David Mitton obits will be of use in ref'ing the TtTE&F pages
this ref ("Th Hindu", Indian national newspaper!) describes Thomas as the "World's best loved locomotive" !! -- so we just gotta use that one!
Which has now been labelled as 'unreferenced' (11 Jul 07)
Thomas the Tank Engine merchandising section 'Thomas in toyboxes' needs an overhaul. (08 Oct 07)
List of Railway Series books -- several new edits today. Many are borderline 'superfluous', but might be OK. All need proof-reading. (14 Jun 07)
The Fat Controller -- someone has added a quite good section about 'Origin of nickname', however it is effectively unsourced. Need to consult The References and cite appropriately. (05 Jun 07)
Mid Sodor Railway -- confirm accuracy of recent edit to 'In Model Form'
Percy the Small Engine -- Check 'The TtTE man' for refs to Percy's origins + update as required
Christopher Awdry -- link already present, but mention the new website incl. on-line shopping "as a new departure...etc" (30 Apr 07)
Wilbert Awdry – find archive copy of old Awdry site (
http://www.aran48.dsl.pipex.com ), partic the Ffarquhar branch and 'The Study' (the latter is not on the new site). Add preservation status of the two models... (30 Apr 07)
Project banner template has been renamed from Thomas-project-page to WikiProject Thomas (standard format). Possible that a bot will be called to rename in bulk, but for now, just change them as you come across them (12 July 2010)

Development Opportunities Information
Articles which have the potential to be developed from already-found references.
This section could contain every article in WP, but the idea is to corral the articles encountered by EdJogg that have a specific potential for development. For example, a short article that links to an 'official website', but makes little use of its content. Although shown in date order, this section is for non- time-critical enhancements, and is intended to leave the main ToDo for more urgent stuff.
New Pages Required (Feb 09): There is no WP entry for
Frederick Savage founder of
Savage's of King's Lynn, maker of fairground equipment and, according to the
J&H McLaren & Co. page, NOT the inventor of the fairground centre engine. A WP search for 'savage kings lynn' reveals a number of pages that will require links. (Also see
savage and
Savage (surname) DAB pages. and
[6])
Metropolitan Water Board Railway (11 Feb 09) -- assoc. website has seen major update -- article is desperately out-of-date (lots of info at website)
Dapol (07 Feb 09) -- article has no logos at present. Could take pic of rolling stock boxes, as well as close-ups.
Wey and Arun Canal (27 Nov 08) -- restoration section needs further work. Not clear what is currently restored, nor what has been achieved -- plenty of ref material on W&A site
Dapdune Wharf (05 Apr 08) -- very sparsely covered! At some stage, add ref to the water turbine, which used to be installed at the Town Mill. (For text/refs re turbine, see
River Wey.) But best to leave until you can expand it for a DYK!!
Railroad plough (17 Nov07) -- under development. Need to integrate text from German WP, etc.
Link added to the Russian WP page. That contains further external links (in Russian) including pics of another preserved example. (12 Dec 09)
Starlight Express -- <<HOME>> -- (06 Nov 07) -- Having found ref for link to
Thomas the Tank Engine (see latter's talk page for details), must add appropriate history to:
Responding to a need for stopping services between long-distance express trains, in 1905? the GWR introduced its first
steam railmotor service between A and B. The steam railmotor is a single passenger carriage with an integral steam engine bogie at one end, plus driving cabs at both ends. The service proved so popular that (~) trailers were built to provide extra accommodation. The trailers were built to resemble the railmotors in appearance, but were only provided with a single driving cab. These were the first purpose-built 'auto trailers'.
Sodor (fictional island)#The Railways of Sodor (08 Oct 07) -- having added 'the first railway on the island', there is now a glaring hole in the history between the first railway and 1914!
Rail transport (12 Sept 07) -- Has been identified as a WP 0.7 article, yet it is in a terrible state. Much work is required to get it to GA status!
Penmanshiel Tunnel (27 Jul 07) -- section about fire incomplete: needs further info from 'Red for Danger'
Chepstow Bridge (01 Jul 07) -- needs work -- former GA candidate requiring lede and refs
Markfield Beam Engine (14 Jun 07) -- not urgent, but would be an enjoyable edit from the new ref found (see talk page) and from the official website.
The Titfield Thunderbolt (05 Jun 07) -- add section describing the rolling stock used (websites can provide some of the information)
