Marle is a character in the 1995 video game Chrono Trigger.
Marle was designed by artist Akira Toriyama for Chrono Trigger. When designer Hironobu Sakaguchi joined the project, he objected to a scenario where Marle meets another Marle from an alternate timeline. He believed that, when all is said and done, the player should return to the Marle they know. Chrono Trigger director Takashi Tokita was responsible for Marle's quest. [1]
Marle makes a minor appearance in Chrono Cross alongside Crono and Lucca. In the game, it is revealed that, some time after becoming king and queen of Guardia, the kingdom of Porre attacked, causing the kingdom to fall. In the game, Marle, Crono, and Lucca appear as ethereal children. Marle and Crono's fate is not explicitly stated, though director Masato Kato noted that she and Crono were directly involved in the fall of the kingdom. [2]
GamesRadar+ writer Maxwell McGee stated that Marle was his first video game crush, noting how invested he became with Chrono Trigger and how, when he was a child, he named her after girls he had a crush on, which he felt made certain scenes between Crono and Marle more evocative.
