The methylbenzenes are derivatives of benzene with a methyl groups ( alkylbenzenes) replacing one or more of the hydrogen atoms.

The only monomethylbenzene is toluene.

There are three dimethylbenzenes, known as the xylenes. They are systematically named as o-xylene (ortho), m-xylene (meta) and p-xylene. (para)

  1,2-dimethylbenzene (o-xylene)
• 
  1,3-dimethylbenzene (m-xylene)
• 
  1,4-dimethylbenzene (p-xylene)

There are three trimethylbenzenes; known respectively as hemellitene, pseudocumene and mesitylene.

  1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (asym-trimethylbenzene)
• 
  1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (sym-trimethylbenzene)

There are three tetramethylbenzenes; known respectively as prehnitene, isodurene and durene.

The only pentamethylbenzene is pentamethylbenzene.
