EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show airs on BBC One and entered its 20th broadcasted year on 1 January 2004 with its 2651th episode, with Louise Berridge continuing her role as executive producer until Kathleen Hutchison took over. EastEnders aired 209 episodes in 2004, with the the typical week comprising four half-hour episodes on BBC One, in a time slot of 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays.
The first half of the year encompasses departures for Barry Evans ( Shaun Williamson), [1] Ricky Butcher ( Sid Owen) and his son Liam (Nathaniel Gleed), [2] Shirley Benson ( Robyn Moore), [3] Laura Beale ( Hannah Waterman), [4] Janine Evans ( Charlie Brooks), Natalie Evans ( Lucy Speed), and Kelly Taylor ( Brooke Kinsella). [5] Lynne Hobbs's ( Elaine Lordan) departure from the show was announced on 15 December 2003. The decision was a mutual decision between Lordan and show producers and Lynne departed in July 2004. [6] Alex McSweeney left his role as Graham Foster at the conclusion of his character's storylines. Jessie Wallace announced her pregnancy in April 2004, with her character due to depart in early 2005. However, Wallace was forced to stop filming in August and Kat departed in November. [7] Gary Beadle left the series in 2004; his character Paul Trueman was killed in December. Scarlett Alice Johnson announced her decision to leave the role of Vicki Fowler on 17 August 2004. [8] Letitia Dean chose to depart from the show temporarily in 2004. Dean's character Sharon Watts and Vicki departed the series on 25 December 2004. [8]
Dudley Sutton joined the cast for three months as Wilfred Atkins, a love interest for Nana Moon ( Hilda Braid); Wilfred appeared between March and June. Den Watts' ( Leslie Grantham) wife, Chrissie Watts, was introduced in April 2004. Tracy-Ann Oberman was cast in the role. [9] Laurie Brett joined the cast as Jane Collins in June 2004. Brett described Jane as "warm, kind, caring and nurturing but she's not somebody that will be pushed around." [10] Alison Pargeter joined the cast for two months for a storyline where her character Sarah Cairns stalked Martin Fowler ( James Alexandrou). The show introduced Mickey Miller's ( Joe Swash) family in September 2004. Berridge described the family as "trouble". [11] The family consisted of Rosie Miller ( Gerry Cowper), her husband Keith Miller ( David Spinx), their twin children Darren ( Charlie G. Hawkins) and Demi Miller ( Shana Swash) and Rosie's son Mickey. [11] Rosie's brother Clint ( Huggy Leaver) was also introduced as a recurring-guest character. Demi's daughter, Aleesha Miller (Freya and Phoebe Coltman-West), was born in October and following this, Aleesha's father and grandfather Leo (Philip Dowling) and Ray Taylor ( Dorian Lough) were also introduced. Lacey Turner was cast as an extension to the Slater family, "feisty female" Stacey Slater; she first appeared in November. [12] Stacey's mother Jean Slater ( Gillian Wright) appeared in one episode in December. On 20 October 2004, the characters of Jake ( Joel Beckett) and Danny Moon ( Jake Maskall) were announced; they debuted in December. [13]
Joseph Kpobie returned to his role as Juley Smith in February 2004. Leonard Fenton reprised his role as original character Harold Legg for one episode in April 2004. Robbie Jackson ( Dean Gaffney) and Billy Jackson returned to the series for one episode, with the role of Billy recast to Bluey Robinson. [14] [15] Nicholas Bailey reprised his role as Anthony Trueman for two episodes in July, following his departure in 2003. Following a successful guest stint, Jemma Walker was invited to reprise her role as Sasha Perkins in a regular capacity. [16] Barbara Windsor and Anna Karen reprised their roles as sisters Peggy Mitchell and Sal Martin for two episodes in September 2004. The characters of Lucy Beale (Casey-Anne Rothery) and Peter Beale (Joseph Shade) were recast in October 2004 in a bid to mature the characters. The roles of Lucy and Peter were recast to Melissa Suffield and James Martin respectively. A show spokesperson said, "Joseph and Casey Anne have done a fantastic job. They're written into EastEnders' history and everyone will miss them." [17]
The following is a full list of the EastEnders 2004 cast.
During 2004, EastEnders aired three half-hour episodes in a time slot of 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays. The episodes were broadcast on BBC One. A weekly omnibus edition was also broadcast on Sundays.
On 21 September 2004, Louise Berridge announced her decision to quit her job as the show's executive producer, following criticism of the show. Of her decision, Berridge said "I've loved every minute of my time on EastEnders, but felt it the right time to move on to new challenges." [18] The head of BBC Drama, Mal Young, praised Berridge's work and said, "There are not many people talented or resilient enough to handle this job, and Louise has proved herself one of the few." [18] Kathleen Hutchison was announced as Berridge's replacement and took over in late 2004. [18]
