EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show airs on BBC1 and entered its seventh broadcasted year on 1 January 1991 with its 616th episode, with Michael Ferguson continuing his role as executive producer until Leonard Lewis and Helen Greaves took over. EastEnders aired 105 episodes in 1991, with the the typical week comprising two half-hour episodes on BBC1, in a time slot of 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Characters that were introduced in 1991 included Rachel Kominski ( Jacquetta May), Steve Elliot ( Mark Monero) and Gill Fowler (Suzanna Dawson). Jo Warne and Jason Rush guest starred throughout the year as Peggy Mitchell and Joe Wallace. John Altman reprised his role as Nick Cotton for three months in 1991. Characters that departed the serial in 1991 included Disa O'Brien ( Jan Graveson), Jackie Stone ( Richard Beale), Johnny Harris (Michael O'Hagan), Marcus Christie ( Stephen Churchett), Diane Butcher ( Sophie Lawrence), Eddie Royle ( Michael Melia) and John Royle ( Paddy Joyce).
The first half of year encompassed departures for Disa O'Brien ( Jan Graveson), Jackie Stone ( Richard Beale), Johnny Harris (Michael O'Hagan) and Marcus Christie ( Stephen Churchett). Sophie Lawrence chose to leave the cast after three years of portraying Diane Butcher, citing not being able to "just carry on being Diane indefinitely" as her reason for leaving. [1] Only two regular characters who were planned to appear in the show indefinitely were introduced in 1991: university lecturer Rachel Kominski, played by Jacquetta May, and Hattie Tavernier's ( Michelle Gayle) friend Steve Elliot, portrayed by Mark Monero. [2] Suzanna Dawson was also introduced in May as the estranged wife of Mark Fowler ( Todd Carty), Gill Robinson. Jo Warne guest starred across several episodes in April as the mother of Mitchell brothers, Peggy Mitchell. [3] This was Warne's only appearance as Peggy as the role was infamously recast to Barbara Windsor in 1994. [3] Jason Rush also appeared in the show across two months between July and September as Joe Wallace, a young, gay chef who is HIV-positive.
John Altman reprised his role of bad boy Nick Cotton for a three month stint which would see Nick become addicted to heroin. [4] As part of Nick's heroin addiction storyline, Michael Melia was axed from his role of Eddie Royle and Eddie was subsequently murdered by Nick. [5] Paddy Joyce's appearances as Eddie's father John Royle were discontinued following Melia's departure from the show.
The following is a full list of the EastEnders 1991 cast.
