4/10/2007 Group of editors seek to increase quality and quantity of gay articles in Wikipedia
By the editorial staff
Since Wikipedia is a digital territory built thanks to the good will and dedication of many internauts, and using this to their advantage, a group of editors have decided to use the tool to increase both quality and quantity of gay articles inside the page.
The project, that intends to be a discussion forum for the subjects published on the website, also seeks to be neutral, not taking sides nor promoting opinions of select groups. Instead, the coordinators inform that the page will be a documental mean [sic] without geographical focus, i.e., for subjects that don't come only from Europe and North America.
The page is divided into many "departments" that supervise different parts of the gay (or of gay interest) articles of Wikipedia, before they are, albeit temporarily, done. That is, many definitios of the digital encyclopedia have to go through orthographic verification, translation, cleaning or even analysis by an expert on the subject.
In one of the finest sections of the project, biographies of essencial names of GLBT culture are named so that the users can complete them with more information and historical data. There are icons such as Andy Warhol, Abraham Lincoln, Leonardo Da Vinci, Lord Byron, Walt Whitman, Marcel Proust, Alexander, the Great, Socrates, Francis Bacon, Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein and James Dean. Another interesting part of the website is the one that "watches" gay articles, both the controversial and those that are merely within the scope. All those tasks and many others are performed by the 165 members of the project that, given the language limitations of each one, contribute with each one of the page's sections. Anyone can contribute, with the only requirement of joining in and informing the languages that you master.
