Talk about a run-on sentence... "It is believed that the use of a limited number of web-resolution screenshots for identification and critical commentary on the computer or video game in question or the copyrighted character(s) depicted on the screenshot in question on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law, as such display does not significantly impede the right of the copyright holder to sell the copyrighted material, is not being used to turn a profit in this context, and presents ideas that cannot be exhibited otherwise." Ross Uber - Talk - Contributions - 03:10, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
The table of contents on Category:Screenshots of computer and video games currently does not work correctly. All letters link to Image:LETTER, but the "Image" part of that is ignored for the purpose of indexing the images. I think this should be fixed in this template, rather than in the category page, because some images are included within the category without using this template, and those do work correctly. If someone knows how to fix this, please do so. Thanks! StuartBrady 03:37, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Do you think it would perhaps be better changed to: "the copyright for it is most likely held by the company or person that developed the game?" This template is used for a screenshot of Scorched Earth, which was developed entirely by one person. Just a thought. 87.232.1.49 21:53, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
Ok, there are editors using this vague template as an excuse to over-reach Fair Use.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Game screenshots are generally considered to have their copyright reside in the maker of the game, rather than the taker of the screenshot, because that's where the creativity came from. A reviewer won't come after you for reusing their screenshots (and would be on dubious ground anyway). Is there an example I'm missing? Night Gyr ( talk/ Oy) 08:56, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
Quick comment. Without forming an opinion on the discussion, there doesn't seem to be a consensus to change the licensing template at this time; you may wish to pursue dispute resolution or head to the village pump or appropriate image policy talk pages (perhaps WP:FU?) so that such consensus can be achieved. Luna Santin 22:22, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
After consideration I have added the discussion entry at WP:FU . BcRIPster 21:54, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Since the category the template uses, Category:Screenshots of video games, has a number of sub-cats, is it possible it add the same functionality that Non-free game cover has? That is, to allow the screenshots to be catted directly to the sub from the template in stead of having both the parent and sub.
Thanks for listening... - J Greb 16:40, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

You know like for The Battle for Wesnoth, that game is open-source, yet whenever they go to tag screenshots of games, they always go for the "non-free game screenshot" tag. Think maybe we could add one of those If this is a screenshot of free software (GPL, BSD, etc.) do not use this template! Use the license tag that correspond to the license instead, optionally alongside Free screenshot to categorize as a free screenshot boxes to this tag? ViperSnake151 12:57, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

The aforementioned category has subcategories for each system, so as to make it easier to navigate and to clutter it up a lot less. Why not do the same thing for Category:Screenshots of video games? After all, there already are a few categories for certain consoles set up. N. Harmonik ( talk) 17:06, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
I think we should create a template for freeware because this template has been used in images of free but copyrighted software (specially videogames). Marco94 ( talk) 02:23, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
Shouldn't we also list the copyright owners? they deserve proper credit too. 68.36.214.143 ( talk) 18:39, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

I know I've said this before but I thought it important to reiterate: you know how
Template: Non-free game cover is made so that you put this (|) then the console's name to have the image put in a specific sub-section? Maybe the same thing could be done to this template. If the screenshots were put into console-specific sub-sections, it would make navigating them much easier. Just add the text between the 'nowiki's: <includeonly>{{{category|
{{#if:{}||}}
{{#if:{}||}} }}}</includeonly> To make it easier, maybe
Category: Screenshots of video games should be moved to
Category: Video game screenshots.

Other templates, e.g. Non-free software screenshot, Non-free web screenshot include a more prominent (notice) reminder for the uploader to include a rationale. They also include a parameter to set when such a rationale is in place. While Video game rationale can be used to substitute parameters in the Non-free use rationale, it's not linked to in the reminder here in Non-free game screenshot. Is it reasonable to ask for this template be amended as follows?

As far as I can tell, the change to this template made by SchuminWeb on November 19 was never discussed, and thus there was no consensus for it established. This makes it a Bold edit. I would like to take the next step in WP:BRD and Revert it, but I cannot, since I am not an admin. Therefore I request that an admin revert SchuminWeb's edit of November 19. Thanks. Beyond My Ken ( talk) 22:56, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
So why do we sort by platform with this template? It appears wasteful as a category because the screenshots may not be consistently from the platform (e.g., games on multiple platforms). If they need to be sorted into smaller categories, I imagine sort by developer would make more sense (the actual author), if sort was necessary at all. czar 17:38, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games has adopted a new project logo which can be seen at the top of this talk page. This edit request updates replaces an image derived from the old logo with the new logo, and separates the copyright symbol for clarity. I have also simplified the wording slightly, mirroring the text at Template:Non-free video game cover, but have not changed the meaning. I believe this edit request is uncontroversial. Replace the image parameter with the following
<br/><br/>
Replace the text parameter with the following
This is a screenshot of a video game, and its copyright is most likely held by the game's publisher or developer. It is believed that the use of a limited number of low-resolution screenshots
- for identification and critical commentary on
- the video game in question or
- the gameplay elements depicted on the screenshot in question
- on the English Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation,
constitutes fair use under United States copyright law. Other uses of this image may be copyright infringement. For more information, see Wikipedia:Non-free content.

Can somebody replace the WikiProject Videogames logo with File:Gamepad.svg? I consider use of the WPVG icon in stub/cleanup/copyright/etc. templates advertising (similiar to making asbox transclude a little icon that says "WikiProject Stub Sorting" with no parameter to turn it off).
