I just have a small wording suggestion: ALT1: ... that
Chinese born Joseph Pierce(pictured) enlisted as a
Union Army soldier, fought at the
Battle of Gettysburg during the
American Civil War, and was made a
corporal? I think it flows just a little bit better. What do you think@
TheLonelyPather:? Otherwise a very well researched article, the provided source supports the hook. A larger version of the clear photograph is used in the article. Interesting bit of history.

MtBotany: Your suggestion is valid. I was thinking of using "Chinese" as an ethnicity, but I understand that it could be miscontrued as saying Pierce was a Chinese (or Qing) citizen. I have struck out the original hook. Cheers, --
