The arboreal taxa Echimys, Phyllomys, Makalata, Pattonomys, Toromys, Dactylomys, Olallamys, Kannabateomys, Diplomys, Santamartamys, Lonchothrix, Mesomys and Isothrix form the Echimyini clade. However, these 13 arboreal genera together with Callistomys constitute a polyphyletic assemblage (green bar).
The fossorial taxa Euryzygomatomys, Clyomys, and Carterodon constitute a polyphyletic assemblage (red bar).
The root of the cladogram is also indicated: it can be seen as the most recent common ancestor of all taxa of the phylogenetic tree.
