The first edition of 1843 was in 3 volumes, as stated on the title page, and had "520 wood-engravings" (I haven't counted them to check). Later editions were variously in 2, 3, 4, or 6 volumes, complicated by supplements (which sometimes formed a 3rd or 4th volume).
