The one inline citation used comes from
[1] which has a list of books, some of which look like they would be useful here, if someone could get hold of them! The site also has some technical specifications which could be included (the site is translated into English and the translations are not perfect). VW "Thing"?
I seem to recall seeing these marketed in the early 1970s in the U.S. as the Volkswagen Thing. Am I mistaken, or can anyone find evidence of this? --
