Negative. I know that some published reports say this, but my (living) grandfather was on the ship when it exploded and still has a copy of the official report somewhere, complete with pictures of the ship, its crew, and the funeral service.--

I have no idea, wish I knew. I even saw it in a book at Barnes & Noble several years ago. In fact, I asked my grandfather after that to make sure I didn't remember wrong, and he said no, there were only a few guys killed. Typical Navy foul-up, probably.--

Curious why the vessel was not scrapped and the metal purchased by a steelworks? Also, did a hedgehog mortar have an arming mechanism - seems particularly dangerous in handling if no 'safety' was in the design?
