I've started a new edit of this article, trying to incorporate existing sources as best I can. Don't quite know what to do about this statement and its source: Arthur Woollgar Verrall placed the lifetime of Tyrtaeus in the middle of the 5th century BC.<reference Classical Review, July 1896, May 1897.. I suspect it refers either to an Athenian Tyrtaeus (poet) or maybe a Spartan-born general, but I don't know. Either way, the source is very old. I'd dump it except it links to a scholar notable enough to deserve an article of his own. I'll leave it here for rescue when and if the need is felt.
