Jasper Deng: Well, it is still as super typhoon strength right now but it is a cat4 now. I've heard that Hagupit weakened to a typhoon, but the JTWC and JMA upgraded it again to a super typhoon strength. Just remember, according to JTWC if a typhoon reaches 130 knots of 1-minute sustained winds, it is already a super typhoon. 140 knots is already cat5 storm.

Typhoon2013: Well, now according to
this it has lost super typhoon status for good, but my point was that although it is commonly reported as a re-strengthening, and indeed JMA agrees that it's a restrengthening, that track file had been amended to appear as if it had never weakened below super typhoon status. Before it had said that it weakened to 125 knots from 145, but now it says it weakened from 145 to 130, still not Category 5 but now no longer any weakening to sub-super-typhoon until about an hour ago.--

Meow: Yes, but that's not my point. Basically, JTWC didn't actually see any restrengthening to super typhoon status as claimed by many news sources. Hagupit basically held it continuously from 1800Z on December 3rd to 1800Z December 5th; the trackfile no longer lists weakening below super typhoon status for any dates in between. Thus there was never a "restrengthening". However it still is fair to say that JMA saw restrengthening even if JTWC didn't.--

Jasper Deng: Unlike other agencies, JTWC often changes the track data operationally. It did downgrade Hagupit to a typhoon yesterday and then it regretted. You will notice this from JTWC’s track map if you track more systems. --

I think it is an appropriate temporary external link. I usually add it to current typhoons in the area. Other sites that have animations are blocked in China, a region affected by these typhoons. Thoughts?

Meow: Are you serious? China is a huge country. Don't you know that? A large portion now speaks English. They can and want to read this article. The external link is useful to visitors.

Done. I added it to the top, alphabetically sorted. If there is another animation in that external links list, then feel free to move the HKO link to the bottom.

Typhoon Hagupit/Ruby Relief Fund
Someone kindly put this out in the article. Thank you whoever you are.
Here is a relief fund that's been set up to help out the people victimized by the storm. ĊHere is a relief fund that's been set up to help out the people victimized by the storm.
