The "unusually elaborate routne" described for using this camera is not significantly more nor less elaborate than many cameras of its era.
It should be noted, however, that the lack of a self cocking shutter did make it more complicated to use compared to several stereo cameras made in the same era, the Kodak stereo camera, for example, which had self cocking shutters.
