Who knew Smurfette had a rather tragic and symbolic conception and rebirth. Damn.
Here I was thinking Smurfette was real. Thanks to the good people here at Wikipedia I now know she's a fictional character! Wow! Thanks!

It's stated in this article that Smurfette wasn't part of the original Belgian comic. In fact she was in the third volume, La Schtroumpfette, and her story is virtually identical to the cartoon version.

Yes, but, in the original stories, she didn't remain with the smurfs, as she knew her presence was only causing strife among them. So she left.--
