Public Internet?

This is silly - "...has been available on the public Internet since 1993, when its older ARPANET host was shut down...", the public Internet is just a continuation of ARPANET. The White Sands site (and presumably the earlier ones) publicly available - its just that it wasn't until 1993 or so that wide access became common. Snori 04:12, 23 December 2006 (UTC) reply

Defunct?

The link to Simtel has been down for 6 days. Have they gone the way of all flesh? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Roedyg ( talkcontribs) 19:40, 19 March 2013 (UTC) reply

The classic Simtel anonymous FTP archive hasn't been at Simtel for almost 20 years... AnonMoos ( talk) 02:16, 20 March 2013 (UTC) reply

Name meaning

Does anyone know where Simtel and Simtel20 came from? 191.82.199.131 ( talk) 21:50, 25 August 2022 (UTC) reply

The "20" suffix is because the computer model was a DECSYSTEM-20. That convention was common on Arpanet; for example there was HARV-10, the Harvard DECsystem-10, MIT-VAX, BBN-TENEX, AMES-67, etc. Lars Brinkhoff ( talk) 05:41, 30 August 2022 (UTC) reply
