Shockat Adam → Shockat Adam Patel – Full name of individual. GnocchiFan ( talk) 19:34, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
I had changed the date assumed office to 5 July because my understanding was that MPs become MPs when they are declared "duly elected" by the returning officer for their constituency. For the vast majority of MPs, this will be the early hours of the morning after the date the polling stations were open. On seeing that several other MPs on Wikipedia have their date of office as 4 July, I was going to revert this one back to that date but saw I had been beaten to it. I have now confirmed with the House of Commons Enquiry Service that MPs assume office when the returning officer announces the results. Therefore hundreds of Wikipedia entries are all incorrect on the date they give. Nonetheless it seems this would require, including MPs elected in previous elections, viewing all the television footage of general elections to see which ones were first elected for their current constituency before midnight and are one of the few that have the correct date. The date is wrong for every other MP, but given the amount of work involved and the approach taken historically, I don't propose now to correct it for any of them. aspaa ( talk) 06:45, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
