Initially the reference to Sampson's name origin stated that a Rear Admiral Richard Thomas Sampson was the facilities name sake this was an error. There was a Richard Sampson who served during World War II who had only reached the rank of Lt.Commander before he died in action. It would seem more accurate to say that the camp took its name from Rear Admiral William Thomas Sampson who commanded the North Atlantic fleet during a battle with the Spanish fleet at Santiago De Cuba on July 3, 1898. Admiral William Sampson grew up in the region having been born in Palmyra, New York in 1854. — Preceding
