In one of the "Did you know" articles 6/29/2010, I noticed a use of "running mate" that I'd never seen before. I found it used the same way in at least one other article. (Specifically, they were http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmine_DeSopo and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Allen .) Apparently, in the New Jersey lower house of the state legislature, 2 representatives are elected from each district, and they run together, as a single ticket for each party. So, in that case, the two Republican candidates for the New Jersey General Assembly from District X are considered running mates. I'd never heard the phrase used that way before, but I'd also never heard of electing 2 representatives from the same district before. Does some political scientist know if this is common, and if so, should the definition of "running mate" be expanded to include it? 71.86.122.57 ( talk) 09:17, 30 June 2010 (UTC) reply
