Retirement?
Didn't he also fly the Tornado? (and from the cockpit, not a desk). I recall something (probably from his autobiog, Fighter Test Pilot: From Hurricane to Tornado) about him encountering the engine gearbox fire problems.

From recall, as I think I wrote this section, I don't think the period from 10 May to July is described in any of the sources that I had access to.
