Ferrari has a long and ignoble history of retrospectively renaming its cars, especially on its website. If contemporary reports and reputable historians such as Doug Nye report that it was the 296 then I am far more inclined to believe them than the Ferrari website.

Maybe I'll try to ask them? I also saw 296 in couple of sources but it still might be incorrect. Luckily it is on couple of pages in case it is needed to be restored.

I'm sat in an airport transit lounge at the moment so I can't do much right now. However, when I get home I'll gladly check my archives and see what I can turn up.
