Seriously guys, this article does need a history section, especially now that there is some talk about reducing padding to increase safety. Especially, until what time was football played with little more equipment than soccer or rugby, and how did the game change with the arrival of heavy padding? --

It would be an interesting addition. There is a reference to it in Conan-Doyle's "The Lost World" (end of chapter 2, "Chain mail, or an American football suit—that's what you'll want")
Project Gutenberg. This book was published in 1912.
