It is debatable that the islamic sultanates of Borneo are all ethnically related to Malay migrations. Bernard Selato suggests that it was more a cultural migration than actual people. From 14th to 18th century the existing hindu kingdoms lovated around main river estuaries progressively converted to Islam. The existence of ‘duet’ city reflects the gradual push bak of previous cultures to the center of the island, less accessible (e.g. Tanjung —> Banjarmasin, Tenggarong —> Samarinda). Islamic cukture and religion came with trade and boats, and likely local people may have converted gradually.
