As a person born and raised in northern Northampton County (
Pen Argyl to be specific) I cannot agree with the claim that the northen edge of Northampton County is considered to be part of the
Coal Region. To the best of my knowledge, there is no coal mining anywhere in this part of county. The area has always been refered to as "The Gateway to the Poconos" and many people who are not from the area assume that northen Northampton County is part of the Poconos itself. The article on the Coal Region (as of the last time I checked) makes no mention of Northern Northampton County. As such, I have edited the article to reflect this. I realize that this may smack of orginal research; therefore, if someone believes anything to the contrary, I encourage them to change the article, provided they can dig up some citations.

Thanks - it may be possible that someone confused
Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (which is in the coal region) with Northampton County. My understanding is that the prohibition on original research is aimed more at preventing crackpot theories (gravity is caused by little grren men sucking on straws below my feet - see
WP:NOR) from getting on Wikipedia. If you can give a citation for the "Gateway to the Poconos" (Chamber of commerce or tourism board or even a billboard?) it is not original research.

After some further reflection, I’ve decided to remove any reference the Poconos from this article. Why? Because only certain areas of northern Northampton County (Wind Gap and Delaware Water Gap come to mind) can, at best, be considered to be the "Gateway to the Poconos." Area residents, if asked, would claim that northern Northampton County is part of the Lehigh Valley. Furthermore, the Pocono Mountains Vacations Bureau defines the Poconos as consisting of Carbon, Monroe, Pike, and Wayne Counties
[1]. It makes no mention of Northampton County, even in context of the "Gateway . . ."

OK, two thoughts. 1)
The Poconos article says parts of Northanpton County are in the Poconos so that should be changed to be consistent, and 2) I think it is fine to say that Northampton Co. is just south of the Poconos (adjacent counties are part of the Geography, so I don't see why adjacent regions can't be).

Was Northampton County one of the original Province of PA counties? Didn't it give birth to several other counties, maybe Pike and Wayne? Any others? Thanks,

I did some interweb searching for a map of Northampton County when it was created in 1752, but could not find one. Is there one that can used to create a WP map for upload here?
