To be honest, I think it's messy because it has wildly excessive technical detail that can simply be dumped. This article misses to capture one of the core aspect that has led to the historic protest, which is the criticism on half a century old documentation on the disenfranchised and the NRC list published which had army veterans, son of freedom fighter, ex-Chief Minister, deaths in detention camps, missing genuine Indian citizens over document inaccuracies etc. Need editors help to compile on that section.

Clean-up effort
Winged Blades of Godric, thanks for taking on the task of cleaning up this page. Probably the best source for the pre-1983 history is the Myron Weiner paper that I added to the Bibliography yesterday. It is miles above anything else you can find. Cheers,
