I wouldlike to add the "good" that the NAMES Project does. This was not mentioned in the above information. As a "maker" of one of the panels, and a mother who has lost a daughter and grandaughter to AIDS, the Panel educates thousands of people and puts a "face" to AIDS. At one event that I assisted in coordinating, we had more than 1500 high school students in to tour a portion of the Panels. We also had several panels dedicated on World AIDS Day, which is Dec. 1. I was able to be in Washington DC the last time the Panels were there, and it should be noted that it was a very solomn experience. It should also be noted that, then President Clinton has been the only US President to acknowledge and view the Project. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.104.119.189 ( talk) 21:17, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
I seem to remember a major dispute between one of the people who started the quilt and the NAMES project, leading to their leaving, or being fired by, the project. If this actually happened, should it be noted in this article? Dfeuer ( talk • contribs)
I also recall the founder wants to move or store the quilts in a warehouse in Washington DC. However, I believe the local chapter had a fit -- they were angry about being "cheated" on the fundraising they did for the national headquarter and receive not one cent. Because the local chapter did coorindate the last two or three quilt displays in Washington, DC and they helped with the fundraising plannings (and the money went to headquarter instead). I do hope someone can make correction if I'm mistaken. Maybe someone at Washington Blade can help out with correct information. Wondering about the article's name- "NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt".
The physical entity (or "asset") which is seen at displays is called "The AIDS Memorial Quilt", while the 501(c)3 organization which supports, displays and maintains it is called "The NAMES Project Foundation". (as per http://www.aidsquilt.org). The website also notes these names are registered marks.
It seems as if this article be named "The AIDS Memorial Quilt" as its subject is The Quilt rather than The Foundation. In any event, the current article title seems quite wrong, given that it combines a portion of the organization name with the asset name. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Snozzwanger ( talk • contribs) 02:09, 21 January 2007 (UTC).
The article states that "only about 20% of the people lost to AIDS related causes are represented" by names on the quilt. (The reference given for this points to a dead link.) This is very misleading - WHO estimates something like 36 million global deaths since 1981, yet the article states that the quilt contains 94,000 names (as of June 2012), not 7.2 million. 86.149.248.59 ( talk) 12:27, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Not sure how to tag this, but the section about quilt maintenance reads to me a bit like self-promotion for Gert. Is there a way to mark this for review, or otherwise flag the section as possible self-promotion? RedOwen1177 ( talk) 14:21, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
