Is it really necessary to show the inflation value of something that was just a couple of decades ago? A hundred dollars is a recognizable amount whether it's 20, 50, or 100 years ago, or now.

Yes, because prosecutors charged Acosta for killing for financial gain because he took the money from the wallet (jurors acquitted him of that charge). The value of money changes drastically. The value of $100 as it is in 1994 won't be recognizable even in 2014 (it's already 20 years ago!) let alone 2044 or 2094 unless something drastic happens. Also, Wikipedia is forever. We shouldn't remove it now and put it back 20 years later. Keep the inflation values in, and whistle and go on our merry ways.

But, You need to include the base year of adjustment. If you continue to insist that it is relevant then you need to include which year you are adjusting for ex: "in 2009 US Dollars". It only makes sense to adjust to the year the verdict was rendered as that would be the value that the jury is considering. An adjustment without context is equally confusing as no adjustment at all.

Selfexiled: I hadn't seen this, so I'll reply now. Sorry for the wait! Anyway, I intentionally did *not* specify a base year because I wanted the current time (now) to be the "base" of inflation. The intention is to use the most current year, and have the figure automatically change as time passes (as Wikipedians will adjust the inflation template year to year). I honestly would like to specify a specific base year when appropriate (perhaps if the sources compare changes from one year to another or something), but in this case I would have to constantly go back and change the base year to keep making it current.

Acosta
First off, is it is a misinterpretation of the source. He was acquitted NOT because "he took money from Tay's wallet." If you read the source, it is saying that the jurors found the fact that Acosta took $100 from Tay's waller was not a convincing evidence to say that he killed him for "financial gain." And I personally believe this is extra, minor, unnecessary information to include in an encyclopedia. The readers only need to know the fact that he was acquitted of financial gain related charge. If the readers want to know more, they can always read at the references.

146.151.96.202: The problem would be solved by adding content: Saying that despite the fact that Acosta took $100 he was not convicted of theft because it not a convincing evidence to say that he killed him for "financial gain." It is true that he took $100, and Wikipedia articles can and do, and should, go into great detail about its subjects.

Is see. What I meant to say was that the charge of "killing for financial gain" was filed because Acosta had taken $100, but despite that jurors acquitted him. I guess it was poor wording on my part.
