So far as I can tell, track conditions got so bad north of the border in 1995 that Amtrak refused to operate on it. The state of Vermont provided funds to fund the train as far as St. Albans, and that has been the working arrangement since.

The Wreck of 1984
In July 1984, a Amtrak Montrealer train derailed in
Williston, Vermont after a flood washedout a railbed. Five people were killed and about 140 people were injured. The train was carrying around 280 people around the time it derailed. This should be added to the main page. --
